Michael Jordan’s older brother promoted to player personnel role with the Bobcats

Michael Jordan is an owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, and owners have the right to install their family members in prominent positions if that’s they way they want to roll, because it’s their team, and they can do with it what they choose.

Jordan has exercised this right by bringing in his older brother, Larry Jordan, who has worked with the team in the past but has now been promoted into an official role with some significance attached.

Larry Jordan, an older brother of Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, was promoted to team director of player personnel, several sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Along with Michael Jordan, Larry will answer to team president of basketball operations Ron Higgins and general manager Rich Cho. Larry Jordan’s previous job was team director of special projects. He fills a position that was vacant for three years after Buzz Peterson departed to become the head coach at Appalachian State.

Is Larry Jordan qualified for a high-ranking job in such a relatively important position in an NBA front office?

Honestly, we have no idea. But he can’t do much worse than anyone else has in Charlotte.

Since the franchise moved there in 2004, it has been over the .500 mark just once, while making only one playoff appearance in the last nine seasons. The team has won 28 regular season games in total over the past two years.

LAS VEGAS New Charlotte Bobcats coach Steve Clifford doesn’t want to get caught shorthanded next season at point guard or among the big men.

He can live with fewer choices at shooting guard and small forward.

That’s Clifford’s general philosophy in building an NBA roster. With the Bobcats signing free-agent center Al Jefferson and re-signing power forward Josh McRoberts, the roster has been firmed up. The last major step will be resolving whether shooting guard Gerald Henderson is back, either through a multi-year extension or on the one-year qualifying offer.

Clifford sees signing a third point guard and retaining another big man as priorities.

“You have to have a third point guard. If your team’s not organized in this league, you have no chance to play well,” Clifford said at summer-league practice Wednesday.

“I think you have to have six bigs,” he added, referring to centers and power forwards.

“We have some flexibility in that (small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist) will play some power forward. But if you don’t have enough bodies up front and you go to Memphis and one of them has the flu, that means somebody (undersized) has to guard Zach Randolph.”

The Bobcats’ stay in Las Vegas for summer league is winding down. Seeded fifth in what now is an elimination tournament, they’ll play the Memphis Grizzlies, who beat the Washington Wizards to advance.

If the Bobcats lose Thursday, they will play a consolation game Saturday. If they win, they will keep playing until they either lose or win the tournament Monday.

Assuming the Bobcats re-sign Henderson, they will be roughly at the NBA’s salary cap next season -- $58.7 million. So any other needs most likely would be addressed with veteran-minimum contracts. That would be the avenue for players like point guard Jannero Pargo and power forward Jeff Adrien to return.

Here’s a look at where the Bobcats stand at each of the five positions:

Point guard: Kemba Walker and Ramon Sessions under contract.

Comment: They’re as solid here as any position. Walker improved dramatically between his rookie and second seasons, as reflected in his invitation to the Team USA minicamp this month in Las Vegas. Sessions was a strong free-agent signing a year ago; he attacks well off the dribble and can defend some shooting guards enough to allow Clifford to play both point guards together. Clifford wants a third point; Pargo was solid over the final 18 games last season, and adds some 3-point shooting.

Shooting guard: Ben Gordon and Jeff Taylor under contract. Henderson is a restricted free agent.

Comment: The team wants to sign Henderson, the 12th overall pick in 2009. The question is agreeing on a salary number. If Henderson doesn’t sign for multiple years, he could play next season under a qualifying offer (in excess of $4.2 million) to become unrestricted next summer. Gordon is in the final year of his contract at a team-high salary of $13.2 million. Taylor’s play in Las Vegas reinforced the idea he can play shooting guard and small forward.

Small forward: Kidd-Gilchrist and Taylor under contract.

Comment: Kidd-Gilchrist is a strong defender who Clifford believes can guard shooting guards, small forwards and some power forwards. Taylor also has defensive versatility and shot 48 percent from the field and 38percent from 3-point range during three summer-league games.

Power forward: Cody Zeller, McRoberts and Adrien under contract. (Adrien unguaranteed).

Comment: Zeller, the fourth overall pick last month, and McRoberts figure to spend lots of time in the high post, since they’re both strong passers and ballhandlers. Adrien should get a look at camp, since he still is attached to the team on an unguaranteed deal.

Predict Gerald Henderson’s Future With The Bobcats

Gerald Henderson remains one of the most notable free agents left on the market. The Charlotte Bobcats reportedly are remaining in contact with their guard, but are not close to meeting Henderson’s demands.

Reports state that Henderson wants up to $8 million on his next contract. Henderson has been a legitimate 15 point scorer the past two seasons, but there’s uncertainty about his durability and spotty three-point shooting. The Bobcats can’t afford to have a lucrative, long-term contract backfire on them with such a young roster.
It’s feasible to believe that a resolution will come soon, but what will it be? Henderson can still sign his $4.5 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next season. He could elect to take long-term security for whatever contract the Bobcats are offering. There’s also a grey area in between that could result in a short-term contract that allows Henderson to become a free agent sooner. If a team comes forward with a reasonable sign-and-trade offer, then Henderson could take his ticket out of Charlotte immediately.

In these links we have a lot of summer league action and a post about how the Bobcats did in Free Agency

Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer had a to do list for the Bobcats at summer league. Did the Bobcats complete the items on the list? Now that summer league is over we can discuss it, was the Bobcats summer league a success?

We've all seen Jeff Taylor's attempt to destroy a basketball rim during summer league by now. Dan Devine of Yahoo! Sports compares Taylor's dunk to three other dunks and asks, who's dunk is the best?

As another summer passes the question rises, what is Bismack Biyombo's future with the Bobcats? Steve Clifford says he wants Biyombo to be a defensive anchor. Steve Reed of the Associated Press talks to Clifford about what he wants Biyombo to become.

Summer League can be a grind. It takes place in Vegas so it sounds like it's nothing but fun. However, what about when you've been there more than 4-5 days with nothing but mediocre basketball and over priced everything? How long will your sanity last? Robby Kalland of PeachTree Hoops did a guest post on Hardwood Paroxysm explaining how he lost his sanity during summer league.

This year's summer league featured a tournament to crown a Summer League champion. The tournament didn't go over as well as hoped. Eric Freeman of Ball Don't Lie says it didn't create much interest.

Mike Prada of SB Nation ranks the top 60 rookies of summer league. Bobcats rookie Cody Zeller found his way to the top of the list.

The Free Agency period is drawing to a close. There's only a few more signings that teams will be making before they've gotten their rosters set and will be preparing for training camp and next season. Zach Lowe of Grantland goes over the winners and not winners of Free Agency. The Bobcats made the list.
