Nope, they are largely exempted from taxes. In Italy .08% from the tax due of millions of taxpayers go to the catholic church or any charitable/research institution of one's choice. When you file the income tax returns there is a space provided for that. They call it "otto per mille", if a taxpayer won't choose to give that amount to any institution then the government receives the total amount due.
