MANILA – A Chinese vessel was intercepted by Philippine authorities off Malapascua, Cebu on Friday.
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Armand Balilo said coast guard personnel on board BRP Nueva Vizcaya spotted Chinese vessel MV Ming Yu Wan anchored in the protected waters of Malapascua.
Balilo said the vessel's captain claimed they had to lower their anchor after the vessel encountered trouble.
Balilo said no vessel is allowed to lower anchor in the protected waters of Malapascua.
Personnel from the PCG, Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Immigration and Bureau of Quarantine have launched an investigation into the latest maritime incident involving Chinese fishermen.
Last April, 12 Chinese fishermen were caught in Tubbataha Reef after their vessel ran aground in the marine sanctuary.
The Chinese fishermen have since been charged with poaching and bribery.
Precious coral reefs were damaged as a result of the grounding, which came after a United States Navy vessel figured in a similar incident in January. – report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
