A Belgian Malinios is a square built dog, bred to be a working dog with lots of play/prey/toy drive to be used as a sheep dog such as his other belgian brothers (Groenendael, Tervuren and Laekenois). This medium to large sized dog is generally 24-26" in males and 22-24" in females tall at the withers. It's weight differs from 60-70 lbs(27-31 kg) with the males usually on the heavier side. This breed is usually used in Police and army operations, SAR (Search And Rescue), personal protection, or any task that needs a high energy dog. But to some, this dog is nothing more than a loving family member, and that inccludes me.
I got my 2 month old Belgian Malinios x German Shepherd mix (more on the Mal side) Trassey last May 18, 2013. Sure I only had her for a week but through those days she has taught me what a Belgian Malinios needs and is. She taught me that a Belgian Malinios is a dog that needs an outlet for its energy. At 2 months old, Trassey does not have alot of that energy yet but she stands tall and proud of what she is and will become. She shows that a dog needs companionship and care, especially that she is a high energy dog.
Before I got her, I told myself how A mal wouldn't be a good first dog. Now, I can proudly tell every one that despite what many Mal owners tell about that it is a dog only for experienced dog owners and owners who can give them a job, mine is that as long as you can give your Mal an outlet for their energy( jogs, runs) it is not a problem. Yes, being an experienced dog owner does help, but it does not guarantee that they( or you ) can handle this breed. The only reason I can find that many mal owners tell you this is because it makes them( not all ) special, it makes them higher than every body else.
To be honest, I am just a 13 year old owner, no special training what so ever, but i have told you what my dog has showed me about what this breed is, and what it can and will be. So long readers, I wish this thread has helped anybody wanting to own this breed or wants to know something about this breed. Thank you.
