INC endorses seven from Team PNoy, five from UNA

Seven candidates from the administration slate and five from the opposition coalition will enjoy Iglesia ni Cristo's (INC) support in the upcoming elections.

The religious sect known for delivering bloc votes, which might spell victory for bets, has made its choice only days before the May 13 polls.

A well-placed source said other copies of the sample ballots have already been handed out during the group’s worship services by “katiwala ng purok” in various locales of INC all over the country.



Sample ballots distributed to INC members showed that the sect's members are being told to vote for the following candidates:

2. Bam Aquino
3. Grace Poe
4. Loren Legarda
5. Antonio Trillanes
6. Cynthia Villar
7. Alan Peter Cayetano

UNA
8. JV Ejercito
9. Richard Gordon
10. Nancy Binay
11. Gringo Honasan
12. Jack Enrile

Some of the candidates endorsed by the INC figured outside the so-called "Magic 12" in latest surveys by the Social Weather Stations and Pulse Asia.

INC has yet officially announced its endorsement despite the distribution of sample ballots. Candidates have also refused to comment on the reported endorsement yet.

The source noted other samples were distributed to faithful members, who were asked to sign a document upon receipt of the copies on a house-to-house basis.

“There was no formal announcement last Wednesday (during worship services), but sample ballots were already distributed to the faithful members of the INC since Wednesday,” the source said.

The source also said the INC will be supporting seven party-list groups which include:

Citizens Battle Against Corruption (Cibac)
Buhay Hayaang Yumabong (Buhay)
Arts Business and Science Professionals (ABS)
Alliance of Volunteer Educators (AVE)
Anti-Crime and Terrorism thru Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS)
Social Amelioration and Genuine Intervention on Poverty (1-SAGIP)
Aagapay sa Matatanda (AMA)

INTERNATIONAL television evangelist Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name endorsed six senatorial candidates from Team PNoy, five from United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), and an independent bet for the May 13 midterm elections.

In a press conference held at Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) studio at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ compound, Quiboloy said he is supporting Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, Loren Legarda, Chiz Escudero, Bam Aquino, Cynthia Villar, Grace Poe, Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, JV Ejercito, Jack Enrile, Nancy Binay, Edward Hagedorn, and Richard Gordon.

He also endorsed the Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS), a party-list lead by Samuel Pagdilao Jr., former chief of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

For local candidates, Quiboloy has endorsed first district congressional candidate Luis Bonguyan and reelectionist Representative Mylene Garcia, both of the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod of Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

"Third district, wala namang kalaban so we don't have to mention it," he said.

Another Hugpong bet, re-electionist Representative Isidro T. Ungab, is running unopposed in the city's third district congressional seat.

Quiboloy has yet to reveal the names of his preferred council bets, but assured to name them on Saturday, May 11.

"Nasa sample ballots na namin yan. We will distribute it on Saturday," he said.

The pastor said the names of candidates to be supported came out from thorough discussions and deliberations done by the kingdom leaders.

"In terms of why we have chosen these people, it’s because of their relationship with the kingdom ministry and their platforms, their vision and programs," Quiboloy said.

The pastor said "relationship with the kingdom ministry" means "closeness with the ministry in terms of what the ministry is doing for."

"So I hope we can make an impact in their winning or in their losing," he said.

When asked of the significance of endorsing candidates during elections, he said it is "for the purpose of guiding" their people and it has no moral restrictions.

He said their congregation's political affairs leaders have been contemplating on the list for about a month ago.

Quiboloy said he does not want to discuss whether he has spoken to the Father Almighty about his political endorsements and chose to keep it private.

"Siguro in this aspect, sa akin na yun. Kasi if you really involve the Father in this governance, it will be His will to be done, not man's will. But this is man's will, the voice of the people. So God will give us the freedom of choice," he said.

The local issues and concerns his people wanted next leaders to address is the issue on coal-fired power plant, environmental problems like flood as he cited the importance to iron out the land use plan of the city, and the traffic congestion.

In District 2, he said Garcia, whom he endorses, should look into road widening especially along Panacan where big trucks pass by, perennial flooding problem and poverty in Paquibato district, which he referred to as the "biggest problem of the district."

"Para at least ang NPA problem diha, matagaan ug solusyon na ang tao makakita ug paglaom unta sa gobyerno," Quiboloy said.

Given his roster of candidates, Quiboloy advised his followers to vote wisely, vote according to candidates' competence and not on popularity-based.
