Again, portfolio is not needed because it's unclear who's doing what especially on big projects. If you can bring a portfolio, then probably it's a small project, and it's not that impressive.

If you are asked what have you have done before. You should explain clearly about the project and your role and contribution.

Ive been interviewing candidates before. I asked them to create ER or UML of shopping cart on the board. If he can demonstrate and explain clearly, then he's technically qualified. Very easy to spot kung kamao or dili. Candidate should have direct to the point answers or he knows what he's talking i.e. no BS answers. I don't even bother asking specifics like you know to do blah blah in Spring? Or a certain method of a class or those Google-able questions. In real world of working, you have those auto-complete tools, online document and Google.

in the end it still doesn't guarantee na kabalo ang nag hatag sa portfolio.

like i explained, it is better for me hear what you have done in that system, that way mas easier to judge if the applicant knows what is he doing of not.

.. pero honestly, when i got interviewed for an OpenGL job (back sa katong time nangita pa ug OpenGL engineer ang Epson-now Kyocera)
i brought my little 3D RPG demo and show it to the Japanese GM, but not only i showed then my 3D Demo (and its a playable game) but i also explained the entire design and approaches, even the math behind it, noting that my 3D RPG demo runs on the engine I solely wrote and not using any 3rd party libraries on it.

pero like what i said, dpendi na sa taw, kay if dli ka katubag it will serve as a double edge sword.

Nindot ang portfolio para sayon ma convince ang interviewer. Sa una gi-interview ko ug HR via Skype then naglalis nuon me kay wala ko maipakita nga existing work due to NDAs. LOLz Recently, gi-interview sad ko sa president sa usa ka company pero wala ko portfolio... na swertean ra ko kay technical siya kaayo... bisan dili 100% sakto ako answer, kabalo siya sa duol2x ra ako tubag... the interview would have been easier if I had a portfolio though... mas sayon ma demonstrate imo skills kung naa jud ang output. Pagdala na lang ug laptop or something...
