if you have no specific need for an RPM based solution - use Debian - the software is solid, they have a good security track-record and management of the system is easy once you learn how to use the tools.

If you have a need for an RPM solution or plan on working with Red Hat at some stage in the future, use CentOS.

Both CentOS and Debian are good choices - so you won't go too wrong in either case.

    as what ive tried:

    CentOS minimal distro
    Pros:
    - small
    - works perfectly even on virtual machine
    - based from RHEL

    Cons:
    - If you are not careful you will endup setting the network manually, doing it on console aint fun
    - not all rpm are available you have add repository from fedora
    - installing and setting up server packages is a pain in the a$$

Note: This is based from a minimal installation of CentOS no GUI

    Debian Businesscard distro (intinst)
    Pros:
    - small
    - its debian what can i say
    - if you love ubuntu you probably love this guy
    - tasksel, the main reason why i so love debian based distro
    - works great, still testing under virtualbox though

    Cons:
    - requires internet during installation

Note: This is based on Debian bare-minimum distro

currently the most common distro used is either RHEL-based (Centos,Fedora,RHEL) or Debian-based (Debian, Ubuntu Server)... again like what i said... weight the option first... if you are to ask me... i recommend debian stable release ("Wheezy"), i dont actually recommend ubuntu server since its based from debian unstable branch...

however RHEL-based is also ok, but it didnt have this tasksel utility, that makes the deployment of application easy-peasy...

still stability should always be keep in mind to avoid breaking you live server...
