As the name suggests, "CHILD" meaning all the features are inherited from the "PARENT" theme. A child theme is necessary in WordPress especially if you will customize the theme "HEAVILY". The benefit of this is that when you update the theme your child theme will still inherit the theme's core functionality while retaining your child theme's customization's. Unlike if you don't have a child theme and you customize the parent theme, once you update the theme you customization's will be gone.
