US retail giant Safeway keen on expanding in PH

MANILA, Philippines - US food and drug retailer Safeway Inc. is looking at expanding its operations in the Philippines.
Top executives of Safeway recently visited the country this month to conduct due diligence, as it eyes expansion of its operations in the Philippines. In particular, the company sees opportunities in the Philippine business process outsourcing (BPO) industry.
A statement issued by the Department of Trade and Industry said that Safeway executives met with DTI Foreign Trade Service Corps Assistant Secretary Josephine Romero during their visit.
Safeway, a Fortune 100 company, is known for offering a wide selection of high quality products at low prices at its stores. According to its website, there are 1,678 Safeway stores across the US and Canada.
Safeway has an extensive network of distribution, manufacturing, and food processing facilities, as well as businesses in an online internet grocer, prepaid gift cards, and financial services.
In 2003, Safeway entered the Philippine market through an affiliate, the Safeway Philtech Inc., which serves as its captive technology center, providing services such as application support and maintenance, application development and enhancements, technology and infrastructure support.
