The best dogs for kids, hands down is a Mini Poodle. Mini Poodles are non-aggressive, are very intelligent and the most affectionate. I would also recommend the Toy but they are more at risk with kids than the other way around. At least a Mini Poodle is not too small for rough play but are very gentle always with kids. Poodles, if properly groomed is like a live stuffy toy that your kids can definitely snuggle with in bed. It's a great breed for kids to grow up with. Most poodles has the natural instinct to snuggle under their arm and keep them warm. Poodles are hands down the most intelligent and sweetest breed. Golden Retrievers are good but too big for kids to maintain. Owning a poodle is also a great way for kids to learn a sense of responsibility. Poodles are very easy to train and your kid will definitely have plenty of great time with it. Poodles very much love to please their owner by learning new tricks. I think it is a privilege to own a poodle. Poodles are the only dog breed that many would claim as NOT a dog, they are poodles. Poodle owner/lovers around the world very rarely refer to their poodles as a dog, they are simply "Poodles".

Poodles are also Hypoallergenic so if your kids are asthmatic or have allergies, they are safe with a poodle. To quote VETSTREET Poodle Breed Information

"No breed has a more highly developed sense of humor than the Poodle. Good thing, too, because no breed has been the butt of more jokes. Humor aside, all the sniping is unfortunate. Many a family overlooks the smart, funny Poodle, thinking him prissy. Still, it is one of the more popular breeds in the world. Poodle lovers know the dogs for their intelligence, ease of training, low-shedding curly coat, and love of family."

This is my poodle. Her name is New York.

    the child-friendly Beagle

Biscuitoy: I also own a 4-month old Female Beagle and indeed she's absolutely adorable but I don't think it's child-friendly in the sense that if the child doesn't have a clue about a Beagle's personality, she/he can very well bring out it's aggressive side (depending on it's breeders - would be lovely if it already came from a breeder that already trained their beagles). Beagles are very rambunctious and barks a lot. Mine is difficult to crate train and it would bark all the time. I had to do some research why my Beagle behave that way and found out that Beagles are very sensitive to sounds and movements (they get very easily distracted). They are so alert all the time and they move around a lot. I love her bunches but for a child- it might be too much to handle for a little one. Probably okay if the child is around 12 years and above.

This is Tamiya (she's a beauty):

I guess it depends on how your beagle was raised. my two year old toddler is in great terms with my 3 year old beagle. they chase each other around, they climb the gate together. my toddler even kisses and rides on my beagle and my beagle has approval of it.

True, I agree though if the owner is already aware how a Beagle behaves. Tamiya is very quiet actually when she's not anxious (I removed the areas that made her anxious by covering her crate with a cloth). Sometimes lang, kids can be rough and Beagles are quite enthusiastic as well so I'm worried basin ma overwhelm nya ang smaller kids.

But Beagles are generally harmless - its only a problem if the dog owner doesn't know how to handle Beagles. Beagles have very soft ears, coat and are really super sweet (almost as affectionate as a Poodle - at least mine is) and I'm sure children will love it too. The advantage though with Poodles in contrast to Beagles, due to their high intelligence, any newbie dog owner can handle it even without being familiar with the breed.

This is my Princess Kola, a tiny princess type Shihtzu . Although she's absolutely cute and adorable, she's more at risk with kids and not the other way around. I find it difficult to potty train this Shihtzu though (even with a tiny voice, she can be as loud as my Beagle when crated). She's not very consistent unlike with my other dogs/pups. This is perfect for older kids who already knows how to take care of dogs. Another that I noticed, Shihtzu like my Beagle are fine stepping on poop and pee. My Poodle doesn't like to get dirty - or that's my opinion and they tend to stay cleaner than my other dogs (apart from my Cebuchon which is a poodle mix since she's extremely clean conscious - I never had to clean her ears as they are always clean).

And this is my Pomeranian (FOX) - he's very very sweet but can be quite loud if allowed. He also have the tendency to bite when jealous (he's quite possessive). Poms need firm owners. Poms must have an Alpha owner. Otherwise, Poms have a tendency to develop the small dog syndrome and can be quite dominant, which is not a good thing.
