If you wanna talk about Singapore, that's the same country that implemented strict population control. That goes against your argument right? To answer your question, why wages are low it is partly because our government sucks, our debt was run up during the Marcos years and because of the law of demand/supply. A big population increases the supply, depressing wages. You act like it is one factor other than population that is causing low wages in reality many things cause low wages including a large population.
Wala man gud lantawa nila na unsa gyu'y naka ingon nga nagka lisud gyud ta.
Kennedy: Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country...
We are also to be blame because we are part of the government and we are the government.
Pnoy morally corrupted the minds and hearts of the Filipino people.
Yes it's true, Singapore implemented the strict population control but that was the time of Lee Kwan Yew. Look at Singapore now? Why they are inviting foreigners to work, to live that will make their populations to 5 + million, it's because they are under populated of 2.6+ millions. They need more people, more manpower because their current population cannot accommodate the existing workforce they need and to sustain their economy. Lee Hsien Loong (currently the Prime Minister of Singapore) imposes to have more babies and giving bonuses to a couples to have a baby. Sauna rana ilang birth control, tan-awa karon nagka problema hinoon.
My arguments is just making examples to what a Filipino worker in Singapore as a cook can do to his/her salary as compared to our cook in the Philippines. I'm referring to a purchasing power.
Population is not the root cause of low wages, it is the corruption and how we are governed. Before Marcos, Philippines is one of the tiger economy. We are the first in Asia economically booming after 2nd World War, until then Marcos regime. Who's to be blame? The Church? It is the government are to be blame because of simple words, mismanagement and corruptions.
Sa una ang 1 peso is equivalent to 1 US$, karon lantawa? dba 40 US$.
What you are discussing are first world problems. As a matter of fact, if Singapore didn't allow foreign immigration it wouldn't lead to a collapse of their society. Yes, the economy will slow down but per capita income won't be greatly affected because there will be fewer people competing for the same number of jobs. As I said again, it is a simple matter of supply/demand. You are talking about the two problems, too much population, and too few population as an either/or proposition. In truth it is a matter of degrees. Somewhere between these two extremes is a sustainable balance that tightly couples population with economic growth.
The problem with the Philippines is that population growth hasn't been linked with the capacity of our economy to absorb the larger population without a depressive effect on wages. Our low standard of living is a complex problem with many causes and I frankly find it hard to believe that anyone would deny that population isn't one of the major contributing factors to our malaise. This would be tantamount to declaring the economic law of supply and demand invalid without basis.
Back to Singapore, they implemented strict population control at a stage of development when they needed it (when they were in extreme poverty) and abandoned population control/encouraged immigration when the economy had reached a point where they could take advantage of it. This is precisely the same path that our country needs to follow if we want to copy their success. Otherwise, prepare to be subject to the law of supply and demand that nobody can escape (except by leaving the country).
