Zero Dark has currently created a controversy surrounding the torture scene, and it could be a gimmick to push its Oscar chances. Honestly, I thought that movie was really good but it seemed like it needed to cut around 30 minutes to make it tighter, not that it matters. Given the fact that Kathryn Bigelow recently won for Hurt Locker, chances are she won't win for director and so will her movie.
Ang Lee's Life of Pi is considered a visual spectacle and not as the real serious thing (no major nominations except BP). Lee is also not that prominent in the Oscar's political circle.
These are all just my opinion. lol
