the best earphones i ever tried, and the single reason i became a music-lover again, were pioneer SE EX9 clip-ons that i saw at Astro in ayala. they were on sale 50% off and had a price tag of around 1800...i thought if they had a previous price tag of more than 3k pesos so they must be good ones. they didnt disappoint. the crisp and clear sounds i heard made me appreciate music again. really.

i really wasnt looking for great headphones. i only wanted earphones that would play loud and clear for listening to audiobooks playing on my celphone. but those pioneer headphones made listening to music pleasurable and interesting again.

the problem with listening to quality headphones is that it makes you realize how crappy your music plays if you didnt have a decent music set-up (crappy music player and/or crappy mp3 files). soon after my encounter with the SEEX9 i bought my first walkman music players. those b170's something that sold for 1995.00 not bad. i started downloading and replacing my music files. i went for mp3's with around 320 bitrate. they simply played better.

i didnt buy the pioneer EX9's...for me they are still the best sounding headphones that i would consider buying ( anyting beyond 2k pesos for me is too expensive for now. maybe later.)- but the fact that they were clip ons bothered me. i am just not used to having the pressure on my earlobes, the clipping feeling wouldnt go away. and they were heavy. just not comfortable. maybe there a reason why they dont often put 40mm drivers on clip-on earphones.

i did go back to astro again and again to try listening to those earphones but the same uncomfortable feeling on my ears just wouldnt let me buy them. so i settled for pioneer SE MJ21. i felt ashamed for trying out the Se EX9 so often without really buying them that i bought the mj21's to save myself from embarrassment.

the only contender was audiotechnica ath sj11...they are around the same price, just around one or two hundred pesos difference. for me that is not enough amount to change my choice. the reason i chose pioneer mj21's? when my gf tried the audiotechnica's she simply said your computer headphones sound better. referring to my a4tech on-ear headphones that i got for just 700 pesos. i just had to agree with her. but of course i couldnt wear them outside without being embarrassed. the a4tech's were too big, too clumsy, and just didnt look good, with a mic sticking out and thick coiled wire.

another reason i chose the pioneer mj21 was that they come with a free pair of earphones. SE Cl24k that retailed for 1030.00..im planning to sell them here in istorya when i get around to posting.

so to answer the question, pioneer se ex9 were the best pair of earphones i tried. but now im using mj21. they sound different, sure. but what i realized is that aside for headphones u should think about your music player, too. and get quality music files. and realize that different headphones sound better with some types of music and worse with other types of music. my headphones now left something to be desired when i listen to old songs like sheryl crow and cranberries, but with current music they sound perfect. i find myself listening to rihanna and taylor swift nowadays.

a second pair of earphones im using are the JVC xxplosive in ear monitors. they are supposed to be the best iem's under 30dollars. sometimes they can be had for 15$ on amazon. my gf gave them to me as a gift, she spent around just under a thousand pesos ordering them from the internet. these are my first in-ear type of earphones but i can tell theyre great. so much bass. and i can still listen to music on my nokia expressmusic with the volume turned to the lowest.

maybe i should post some pictures later. this post is getting too long. =)
