SWU stuns UST in overtime: Faces San Beda in grudge rematch for third place in PCCL

(The Freeman) | Updated November 26, 2012 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines - It was just a non-bearing game, but the outcome was so sweet for the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras.

The reigning CESAFI champion drew strength from Cameroonian rookie Benoit Mbala's 41-point explosion as it turned back the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growing Tigers, 93-91, in overtime in the 10th Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Final Four yesterday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

The 17-year-old, 6-6 Mbala, one of SWU's rookie recruits from Africa, made 13 of the 27 shots he took from while making 15 of the 18 free throws he attempted and spiked it with game-highs 16 rebounds and four blocks.

“We have a team with an average age of 19 years old so this team is really young and inexperienced,” said SWU coach Yayoy Alcoseba. “That's why we cherish playing in this kind of tournament because we're gaining experience playing here. Now if we win, that will be just a bonus.”

Mbala's spectacular effort has been drawing raves so much that several Metro Manila schools have started inquiring for him.

“That's the problem when they see good players in Cebu they want to get them,” said Alcoseba. “They're big schools, can't they get their own?”

It was the Cobras' first win in the semis after starting off with a heartbreaking 72-73 defeat at the hands of the Lions Wednesday and a one-sided 78-96 defeat to the Eagles Friday.

And Alcoseba hopes they could wind up at third place.

“We'll definitely go for third place,” he said.

Monbert Arong also put up huge numbers as he buried a game-high five triples to finish with 17 points while Bonifacio Guillena and Bernie Bregondo each fired 11 to help in the cause.

Arong, whose booming triple late in OT gave the Cobras the lead for good, got special mention from his coach.

“Arong has no conscience when it comes to shooting, that's heart there,” said Alcoseba.

In the main game, UAAP five-peat champion Ateneo Blue Eagles shut down NCAA grandslam titlist San Beda Red Lions in the third quarter and cruised to a 66-49 rout to forge a title rematch with an old, familiar foe in Santo Tomas.

All the Eagles needed was tightened up the defensive screws to outscore the Lions, 20-5, in the third period and turn a shaky 28-26 lead at halftime to a comfortable 48-31 advantage going into the last 10 minutes of the game.

And then it was cruise control from there.

Ateneo thus arranged an interesting best-of-three title showdown with UST, which defeated the former in the first day of the semis, 76-66, Wednesday, starting on Tuesday at the same venue.

Game Two is set on Nov. 29 while a decider, if necessary, is on Nov. 30.

The scores

SWU (93) - Mbala 41, Arong 17, Guillena 11, Bregondo 11, Nalos 6, Aboude 5, Dedace 2
UST (91) - Teng 20, Mariano 20, Bautista 14, Afuang 10, Pe 8, Fortuna 7, Lo 4, Vigil 3, Garrido 3, Hainga 2

Quarterscores: 16-22; 40-39; 57-56, 77-77; 93-91 (OT)--Philippine STAR News Service (FREEMAN)

Limpag: What’s next for coach Yayoy and the Cobras?

By Mike T. Limpag
Fair Play

Monday, November 26, 2012

MINUTES after Ryan Aznar’s name was called as the winner of the iPhone 5s during the 30th Sun.Star Cebu anniversary party with friends, sources and advertisers last Saturday night, I approached the Southwestern University athletic director and teased him that at least, his new gadget would ease the headache he’s having right now.

The headache, of course, involves coach Yayoy Alcoseba, who was seen on national TV hitting a player in the head, twice.

And mind you, the incident may have stemmed from what happened minutes after SWU lost to San Beda College in the PCCL Final Four, but this won’t be limited to that because aside from being a coach, Yayoy is a Cebu City councilor who’s running for a spot in the Provincial Board in next year’s election.

Those who are for or against him will surely be waiting for what SWU will do regarding the case. And coach Yayoy’s political opponents, I think, are eager to see the coach punished because the councilor who is known as one of the best tacticians in the country also use his sports platform when he’s campaigning.

And of course, coach Yayoy’s supporters won’t allow that and are hoping that the coach’s political opponents won’t get any ammunition they can use when the campaign season gets full swing.

And that’s just two sides of the story.

There is still, of course, the school. As a coach of the basketball team, Coach Yayoy is considered a mentor, and if nothing is done, I’m sure some of the SWU mentors who have strayed from their paths and have been reprimanded may ask, “Hey, we just saw our coach hit a player on national TV, live, and it’s just OK?”

Because it is a school, and it has to protect its players, SWU has to act.

And of course, there’s the player’s family. How would you feel if a family member gets humiliated like that over national TV? How would you feel if a brother, or son, or daughter gets humiliated like that, in a game that most of his or her schoolmates, friends and relatives saw?

And how would you feel if you learned that it wasn’t the first incident?

So Aznar, the athletic director of SWU, will really need that iPhone 5s to distract
himself from the issues he has to deal with the next few days.

But, as the amiable athletic director told me that night, the distraction won’t be enough.

Of course, you could say, too, the ball is in Coach Yayoy’s hands now.

Just like in all other games that he has to deal with, the coach has to weigh his best options, but instead of dealing with it on the fly, he’ll have a day or two to really think things over.

And I think, before this gets out of hand, before his political opponents start printing out leaflets or start showing clips of that game over social media, the coach has to make the first move.

It’s just unfortunate that the career of one of the best basketball tacticians in the country has come down to this.

So, what will coach Yayoy do?

Choose his coaching career over his political ambitions or would it be the other way around?

Let’s wait and see.

CESAFI should sanction coach. They were there as representatives of the league. It reflects on the league (and the school) if they don't do anything. Bisan slap on the wrist basta kinahanglan naa separate sanctions ang CESAFI ug ang SWU.

Red Lions nip Baby Tams in battle of champions
November 26, 2012, 06:41 pm
From SPIN.PH - Sports Interactive Network Philippines

ADVEN Diputado former point guard of SACRED HEART SCHOOL Ateneo de CEBU hit a buzzer-beating jumper as four-time defending NCAA champion San Beda put one over UAAP reigning titlist Far Eastern University, 80-79, to advance to the semis of the 1st Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) on Sunday at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym in Manila.

In a game filled with the drama of a championship game, the Red Cubs proved to be the steadier team as they rallied from a nine-point deficit early in the payoff period to frustrate the Diliman-based squad.

After burying a big trey, back-to-back UAAP MVP Jerie Pingoy calmly hit two pressure-packed charities that enabled FEU to regain the lead, 79-78, with barely three seconds left.

FEU’s celebration, however, proved to be premature as Diputado eluded his defenders and delivered the game-winning basket.

The win shoved the Red Cubs, proud owners of 20 NCAA titles, to a Final Four showdown with San Sebastian, a team they have beaten in the last two NCAA championships.

The Staglets completed the NCAA domination of their UAAP counterparts after downing University of Santo Tomas, 82-61.

The day’s other big winner was Letran, which stunned reigning Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) champion Chiang Kai Shek College, 67-61.

The Squires, who drew 27 points and a tournament-high 23 rebounds from John Quinto, will face Tiong Lian runner-up Hope Christian High School in the other semis match.

The Hope Christians romped off to a 79-62 win over Xavier School through the 26-point performance of Clint Doliquez.

The semis matches of the event sponsored by Ironcon Builders, MEC Networks, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Blackwater Sports, Wrangler, Welcoat House Paints, and Hapee Toothpaste and Dickies Underwear will be held on Friday, while the finals is on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Mocon led the Red Cubs with 22 points and 14 boards while Joshua Caracut and Diputado combined for 24 points.

Pingoy formerly of UNIVERSITY OF CEBU JR. WEBMASTERS paced the Baby Tams with 20 markers.

PCCL FINALS STARTS
UST begins UAAP finals rematch with Ateneo; SWU plays San Beda in battle for third
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 8:10 am | Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

Revenge will be on the menu waiting to be served today in both matches in the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) including Game One of the best-of-three Finals series at the Arena in San Juan City.

All eyes will be on the opening game of the championship series between Ateneo Blue Eagles and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, a rematch of this year’s thrilling UAAP Finals, which the former won.

The Southwestern University (SWU) will also be eyeing revenge against the NCAA rulers San Beda when the two teams square off for third place starting at 2 p.m.

The Cobras are still seething over their 72-73 loss to the Red Lions last week in a game that went down to the last play.

Unfortunately for SWU, things did not go its way as it failed to get off a shot as time expired. That spoiled the Cobras’ comeback from 20 points down in the second half.

Momentum appears to be on SWU’s side as it is coming off a 93-91 win over UST last weekend.

Cameroonian forward Ben Mbala had another one of his coming-out parties as he scored a whopping 41 points and added 16 boards, just days after torching San Beda with 27 markers.

For SWU head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba he wants to treat this match as if it was a championship game.

“We want to treat it like a championship game. A third-place finish would be like a championship for us, “ said the multi-titled coach.

LIONS TRIP COBRAS
SWU fails to snatch third place trophy in PCCL; UST leads Ateneo, 1-0 in finals
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:43 am | Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions, Southwestern University Cobras yesterday scored just seven points in the fourth quarter and suffered a bitter, 56-64 loss to the San Beda Red Lions in their battle for third place in the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) at the Arena in San Juan City.

Meanwhile, the University of Sto. Tomas beat reigning UAAP champions Ateneo de Manila University, 82-76 to grab a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three championship series.

The win allowed the Red Lions to finish third for the second year in a row after beating another Cebu-based team, the University of Cebu Webmasters last year. San Beda did it with equal parts defense and SWU’s own ineptitude as the Cobras fell into a maze of errors and bad shots after heading to the payoff period tied at 49-all following a halfcourt buzzer-beater by guard, Junrey Ortuyo.

The Red Lions dominated in crunchtime as Davaoeno, Baser “The Hammer” Amer conspired with Kyle Pascual for killer baskets in an 8-2 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game at 64-53, with under two minutes remaining. The Cobras canned just three field goals in the entire fourth period, the last one off a meaningless three-pointer from Bon Guillena with 22 seconds remaining in the ballgame.

“This whole tournament was a great learning experience for the team,” said SWU’s fiery and multi-titled head coach, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.

Reserve forward, Art dela Cruz, led the team with 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists while SWU was paced by Cameroonian, Ben Mbala, who had a relatively quiet outing with 16 points after exploding for 41 in his last outing.

For a while, it seemed as if the Cobras would finish third as they led, 41-35, in the third canto after a 15-7 run anchored on guards, Joseph Nalos and Monbert Arong. But San Beda recovered and countered with a, 10-0 blast, behind dela Cruz’s six points that put them back into the driver’s seat before Ortuyo’s incredible hail-mary of a shot tied the count at the end of that stretch.

EAGLES TIE SERIES
Five-time UAAP champion Ateneo escapes UST Growling Tigers in Game 2
By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:48 am | Friday, November 30th, 2012

The Ateneo Blue Eagles pounced on a costly defensive lapse by the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers to win Game Two, 70-69, in the best-of-three Finals series of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Tigers had possession but had just one second left on their shotclock with under 20 seconds left to play when Kevin Ferrer launched a three that hit nothing but air as the buzzer sounded.

Anticipating a 24-second shotclock violation, UST relaxed but play went on and Ateneo grabbed the rebound and found a streaking Kiefer Ravena for the game-winning layup with 11 ticks remaining.

UST had a shot at the win but Ferrer’s attempt from the corner was batted away by Ryan Buenafe.

Jeric Fortuna could not get a clean shot off at the final buzzer, giving Ateneo the win and a chance at a fourth PCCL title in Game Three slated Dec. 7 at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Ravena, nicknamed “The Phenom,” had 21 points, four rebounds and three assists while Cebuano big man Greg Slaughter had 14 and 10 boards. Tonino Gonzaga also was a key factor with 13 markers.

Fortuna tallied 18 to lead UST while Jeric Teng and Aljon Mariano had 12 points apiece.

USC offers milo national stint to fallen teammate
Cebu Daily News 7:33 am | Friday, November 30th, 2012

AN EMOTIONAL University of San Carlos side will be gunning for the national title in the Small Basketeers of the Philippines (SBP) class as they compete in the national finals of the Milo-backed BEST Twin Tournament tomorrow in Roxas City.

USC will be dedicating its participation in this annual tournament to a fallen comrade, JV Cenabre, who passed away earlier this week after losing his bout with leukemia.

Carrying the banner of USC will be Neon Chavez, Carl Jovellanos, ZJ Enriquez and Clint Octaviano.

USC will be up against some very stiff competition in powerhouse La Salle Greenhills, Ateneo de Davao and Don Bosco Pampanga.

The University of the Visayas is also ready to go to battle for the Passerelle title as it takes on the best of the best Under-15 teams from the rest of the country.

UV is looking to keep the dominance of Cebu going after the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles won the national title in 2010 and 2011. USC meanwhile, hopes to break the long title drought of Cebu in the SBP, which dates back to the mid-2000. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
