PCCL: San Beda squanders lead, but recovers to escape SWU

MANILA, Philippines — NCAA titlist San Beda was held spellbound in the fourth quarter but still managed a 73-72 victory over Cebu champion Southwestern University Wednesday in the PCCL final four at the San Juan Arena.
The Red Lions only scored six measly points in the final 10 minutes, but were lucky to have built a cushion huge enough to still bag the win as the single round robin kicked off.
Graduating forward Jake Pascual accounted for the last four points of San Beda, which squandered a 20-point advantage it had built — only late in the third.
Pascual also had six rebounds and three assists for his squad, which missed the services of Nigerian center Ola Adeogun, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle.
With under a minute left, the Red Lions were holding on to the lead by a hairline, after SWU’s Monbert Arong secured the leather off a jump for fastbreak lay-in.
Baser Amer, who was checked in the second half after leading San Beda with 13 points at the half, threw up a hurried trey and missed with 17 seconds — which could’ve doomed his squad.
But San Beda got a huge break in their favor when the Cobras, who still had 10 seconds to pull off a massive upset, didn’t seem aware of the time and wasn’t even able to attempt a shot.
The victory gives the Red Lions a good start on their bid to become the second national champions from the NCAA, as they face UAAP finalists Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas next.
The visiting Cobras, though, just sent a strong message they are no pushovers, especially with Cameroonian Ben Mbala in tow.
Mbala poured the bulk of his 27 points in the pivotal payoff period run by SWU — which turned a 45-65 deficit to just a one point game.
The Cobras, the Cesafi champions, barged into the final four after winning the Southern Islands regionals of the PCCL.
Top two squads in the single round robin final four will figure in a best-of-three finals — a different format from last year’s tournament.

SWU stuns UST in overtime: Faces San Beda in grudge rematch for third place in PCCL

    (The Freeman) | Updated November 26, 2012 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines - It was just a non-bearing game, but the outcome was so sweet for the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras.

The reigning CESAFI champion drew strength from Cameroonian rookie Benoit Mbala's 41-point explosion as it turned back the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growing Tigers, 93-91, in overtime in the 10th Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Final Four yesterday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

The 17-year-old, 6-6 Mbala, one of SWU's rookie recruits from Africa, made 13 of the 27 shots he took from while making 15 of the 18 free throws he attempted and spiked it with game-highs 16 rebounds and four blocks.

“We have a team with an average age of 19 years old so this team is really young and inexperienced,” said SWU coach Yayoy Alcoseba. “That's why we cherish playing in this kind of tournament because we're gaining experience playing here. Now if we win, that will be just a bonus.”

Mbala's spectacular effort has been drawing raves so much that several Metro Manila schools have started inquiring for him.

“That's the problem when they see good players in Cebu they want to get them,” said Alcoseba. “They're big schools, can't they get their own?”

It was the Cobras' first win in the semis after starting off with a heartbreaking 72-73 defeat at the hands of the Lions Wednesday and a one-sided 78-96 defeat to the Eagles Friday.

And Alcoseba hopes they could wind up at third place.

“We'll definitely go for third place,” he said.

Monbert Arong also put up huge numbers as he buried a game-high five triples to finish with 17 points while Bonifacio Guillena and Bernie Bregondo each fired 11 to help in the cause.

Arong, whose booming triple late in OT gave the Cobras the lead for good, got special mention from his coach.

“Arong has no conscience when it comes to shooting, that's heart there,” said Alcoseba.

In the main game, UAAP five-peat champion Ateneo Blue Eagles shut down NCAA grandslam titlist San Beda Red Lions in the third quarter and cruised to a 66-49 rout to forge a title rematch with an old, familiar foe in Santo Tomas.

All the Eagles needed was tightened up the defensive screws to outscore the Lions, 20-5, in the third period and turn a shaky 28-26 lead at halftime to a comfortable 48-31 advantage going into the last 10 minutes of the game.

And then it was cruise control from there.

Ateneo thus arranged an interesting best-of-three title showdown with UST, which defeated the former in the first day of the semis, 76-66, Wednesday, starting on Tuesday at the same venue.

Game Two is set on Nov. 29 while a decider, if necessary, is on Nov. 30.

    The scores

    SWU (93) - Mbala 41, Arong 17, Guillena 11, Bregondo 11, Nalos 6, Aboude 5, Dedace 2
    UST (91) - Teng 20, Mariano 20, Bautista 14, Afuang 10, Pe 8, Fortuna 7, Lo 4, Vigil 3, Garrido 3, Hainga 2

    Quarterscores: 16-22; 40-39; 57-56, 77-77; 93-91 (OT)--Philippine STAR News Service (FREEMAN)
