CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers notched their second straight victory with a 91-74 thrashing of Mindanao champion Holy Trinity College (HTC) Wildcats of General Santos City to climb to the next level of the 2012Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Cebu knockout stage yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Lancers, thus, set up a grudge rematch of sort against bitter rivals Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras for the Southern Islands overall championship and a seat in the PCCL Final Four together with early qualifiers UAAP five-peat champion Ateneo Blue Eagles and NCAA grandslam titlist San Beda Red Lions.
The Lancers and the Cobras will rekindle their decades-long rivalry at 4 pm today, right after the La Salle Green Archers square off against the Adamson University Falcons, the hottest team in the league with five straight wins coming from the Metro Manila qualifying games.
Revenge is definitely at the back of UV's mind, but SWU is prepared and ready to reaffirm its dominance over the mighty Lancers.
"We have to win the PCCL elimination to prove that we are indeed the best team in the Southern Island," said the decorated SWU coach Raul "Yayoy" D. Alcoseba in an earlier interview.
The Cobras made a historic title run in this year's Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season after they shocked the heavily-favored UV Lancers.
In the epic finale of their best-of-five series, the Cobras amazingly recovered from the depths of an 18-point deficit at the final seven-minute mark of the contest to bring the Lancers back to earth via a 73-72 cliffhanger in what is by far the greatest comeback in Cebu basketball history.
Now that their paths have crossed again, the Cebuano fans will surely be treated to another slambang showdown between the two giants in local hoopdom.
Alcoseba is expected to squeeze the most from his Cameroonian twin towers Benoit Mbala and Justin Aboude, even as the Cobras could also draw firepower from Monbert Arong, Bonifacio Guillena, Joseph Nalos, Bernie Bregondo, Junrey Ortuyo, and their overnight star John Pajantoy.
The Lancers, on the other hand, will pin their hopes on 6-foot-7 Nigerian center Steve Cedrick Akomo and a powerhouse cast of local talents in the mold of Hernal "Wowie" Escocio, Jun Saycon, Phil Mercader, Emman Calo, John Abad and Raffy Oktubre. (FREEMAN)

PCCL: Ian Sangalang powers Stags past Bulldogs 75-68

MANILA, Philippines – Ian Sangalang exploded in the second half to push defending champion San Sebastian past National University 75-68 Wednesday in the Southern Island phase of the PCCL at the Cebu Coliseum.
Sangalang, the NCAA MVP, pumped in 26 of his game-high 30 points in the second half as the Stags, who were without Alaska’s second overall pick Calvin Abueva, moved on and will face another UAAP foe next in either De La Salle or Adamson on Sunday in Manila.
The Stags pounced on costly mistakes by the Bulldogs late with Ronald Pascual making two free throws after a technical foul by Emmanuel Mbe before Jovit de la Cruz scored underneath to make it 73-66 with only two minutes left.
Pascual, who along with NLEX teammate Sangalang just came off a thrilling win over Air21-JRU Tuesday in the PBA D-League, added 19 points.
NU found an unlikely offensive production from seldom-used forward Tristan Perez, who sparked an 11-2 run that put the Bulldogs on top 40-35 in the third period, as back-to-back UAAP MVP Ray Parks had a quiet outing with just 13 points.
Joshua Alolino also had 13 markers while Perez ended up with 10.

Cesafi rivals UV, SWU face off for slot in PCCL Final 4
By Rommel C. Manlosa
Wednesday, November 14, 2012
THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers broke the game wide open in the final quarter to gain the second slot to the Southern Islands Championships of the 2012 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Sweet 16 tournamen. They earned a methodical 91-74 win over the Holy Trinity College Wildcats of Gen. Santos City at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
UV’s victory earned them a shot for the Final Four but first they need to wipe out Southwestern University Cobras, who got the first slot by virtue of winning the Cesafi title.
UV coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. knew he needed to exorcise the ghost of last October’s finals in order to get what they wanted.
“The Cesafi championship was only our short program, our main goal for this year is the PCCL title or at least a slot to the Final Four. This is what we are preparing for the whole year and it is just a win away,” Belano told Sun.Star Cebu.
UV spent more than a month on correcting their errors, and the Lancers are now focused on their game.
“We were motivated by that loss (to SWU) we worked doubly hard – the players and the coaching staff. We don’t want to make the same mistakes again,” added Belano.
The Lancers and the Cobras are 3-3 this season. UV’s wins came during the elimination round, 95-85, last Aug. 26 and Game 2, 81-79, and Game 3, 69-65, of the the finals series. SWU got its wins in Game 1, 77-72, Game 4, 68-65, and Game 5, 73-72.
In the PCCL, UV has been a regular fixture since 2002 and was a runner-up in 2007. UV also got third place twice in 2002 and 2004.
SWU is aiming to make its first appearance in the PCCL Final Four.
Since returning to the Cesafi in 2008, SWU has failed to make the Final Four and the closest it got was last year when it got knocked out by the UC Webmasters in the Southern Islands championship in Ormoc City.
The much-awaited rematch will start at 4 p.m. following the De La Salle University Green Archers and Adamson University Falcons game at 2 p.m.
Yesterday, Holy Trinity College put up a good fight for the first three quarters as they kept the Lancers within reach before losing steam in the final period.
Cesafi Rookie/MVP awardee Hernal “Wowie” Escocio scored the game high 23 points and Vincent Mendoza, John Abad and Jerome Silva contributed 12 points each for the win.
Chris Masaglang topscored for HTC Wildcats with 20 points.
Meanwhile, defending champions San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags advanced to the next round after eliminating UAAP third placer National University Bulldogs, following a 75-68 win.
Ian Sangalang compensated for his free throw woes by dominating the middle as he scored 26 of his game high 30 points in the second half to lead the Stags two steps closer to the Final Four.
