MichaelNikki.. pnoize2k7 said it very well. I suggested film because you said you're starting. I myself is in the learning process and I use my film slr more than my digital nowadays and though you have to spend more on films but the learning is something that you can't just forget.. taking film will give you the very basic of photography..

But nothing is wrong on digital.. in fact, it should be your obvious choice.. Cheap in the long run..

film forces you to be more deciplined...sort of true.
but the way i see it, it may also force you not to shoot and learn more
(as you hold back from spending everyday for negatives and developing charges)
besides, being a newbie without going to photography school, one may not know yet when to pullback and when not to holdback on a shot.
developing that TAKES YEARS of EXPERIENCE!

having higher miss/hit ratio (part of learning) in the begining is alright, (at little or no daily expense being digital) allows one to learn more in a shorter time, more op to learn and maybe eventualy developing the decipline not to be too trigger happy....
put it this way guyz, the higher the miss/hit ratio means more room for improvement, you can only get better

another best way to learn is to learn from mistakes...

i remember during the IPC 1st photo op when they asked me how to trigger the studio lights...i explained. seemed like everyone understood.
then right before we started shooting i reminded everyone they need to set camera to manual and explained what will happen if they dont...shared my settings of 5.6 to 8.0 and 1/80 to 1/160 then if they are using hotshoe flash to trigger, they need to set it to MANUAL not ETTL...yes they all followed but later i noticed very slow shutter click and noticed ettl double pops...i asked why...coz they wanted to try it outfor themselves if indeed it wont work...gi tuyo gyud nila change to Av and ETTL just to see what happens

mo experiment gyud, bisan gi ingnan na mao na buhaton mo simang pa (pinoy photography)
naka nindot sa digital kai naa ka chance to learn from your mistakes coz instant ang result, you can see the picture right away. you can adjust your settings for the next shot to be better

(ex. change the iso, which is a hassle for a film camera, mag ilis gyud ka ug film.)

you can also be creative, over or underexpose to get the desired feel of the photo. not to mention tweaking it in photoshop. Sus kung film pata dili gyud ko apilapil ani photography. toink.

You're right markyap and marlix77.. digital can offer it to you more conveniently than film. I use my film camera mainly because of my class assignments and because I want to learn and fully understand the art. Its true and very hard at all times buying films, developing (I know how to develop a film now.. yehey..) I really took it the hard way and still learning to date so I should have no rights to suggest something to the newbies here.. I myself is a super newbie..

But for a quick share.. to start.. get either a film or digital SLR.. master the ergonomics of the camera (Nikon's the best actually) hahaha.. concentrate more on composition.. practice.. practice.. and more practice..
