Dirk Nowitzki: tough to crack the West’s top three ‘but we’re sure going to try’

Dirk Nowitzki is an optimist by nature and he feels good about the Mavericks. But even he concedes that his old buddy Steve Nash may have tilted the Western Conference in a way that makes it very difficult for the Mavericks to compete.

“On paper, they’re really, really good,’’ Nowitzki said of Nash and the Los Angeles Lakers, who also added Dwight Howard in the off-season. “You look at their starting lineup, it’s almost an All-Star Game starting lineup. They’re stacked. They’re going to be great. They’re going to be tough to beat if they stay injury free.’’

Therein lies the rub, at least that’s what everybody else in the Western Conference hopes. The Lakers will be relying on Howard, who had off-season back surgery.

“Nobody knows how Dwight’s doing,’’ Nowitzki said. “But if they’re all healthy, they’re going to be a tough team and definitely one of the favorites.’’

The consensus is that the Lakers and defending West champions Oklahoma City Thunder are the teams to beat with San Antonio, Denver, the Los Angeles Clippers, Mavericks and Oklahoma City in the next tier of teams.

“Where we’re going to end up, I have no idea,’’ Nowitzki said. “The West is stacked, especially at the top. So it’s going to be tough to crack that top two or three up there, but we’re sure going to try.’’



By the way, Nowitzki also will have to go through another adjustment process when he sees his former teammate and still-close friend Nash.



“It definitely was weird to see Steve in a Phoenix uniform and it’ll be even weirder now to see him in a Laker jersey,” Nowitzki said. “But you get used to it after a couple games.
