Sir, in your case..i know the feeling of loosing the dearest of all your dogs...
you did the right thing in your part because you have a other dogs around the affected dog, in TS case...i don't know if he has others dogs, but in my own opinion lng... I wont put down my one and only dog if i know it would have a chance.. Dba? pero if daghan jud kag dogs, well...for the benefit of the rest, i would follow such thing you did...

5 years ago 2 pit bull puppy of mine died from this disease, and the sad part is i have some dogs (mix breeds) present around the 2 pups, it just so happen that the other dogs were not vaccinated for distemper (5 years ago i didn't have the knowledge about vaccination, it is the reason why all my dogs are not vaccinated) one of my mix-breed dog died because he got the disease... You said,
"once infected, a dog will be forever "carrier" of the virus, thus pose a continuing threat to other dogs"
In that statement you raise sir, why did the other dogs of mine never become carriers of the disease even though i didn't have them checked if they were infected??
Some lucky dogs would not die if infected with distemper (vaccinated or unvaccinated) and some would die...
My question is, why do you say so??

slim chance of survival. there are some cases na makasurvive though, but the effects and symptoms of the virus/infection will forever manifest in the dog, worse, he will forever "pose threat" to those that who have not yet contracted the disease.

If maka survive gani ang dog nimo boss TS. isolate nlng nga human ra ang maka contact or something. Be safe kai basi mabuak napud imong kasing2 ug matakdan imong other dogs.
