Araw-araw takes charge

SWEET shooting guard Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw took charge when everything seemed hopeless to lead the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles to an 80-76 win over the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers in Game 1 of the best-of-five championship series of the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) High School Basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
Araw-Araw scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter that helped the Eagles weather another brilliant performance from the reigning MVP Andres Paul Desiderio, who scored the game high 31 points for the Baby Lancers.
UV was heading for the win after Desiderio scored at the 3:21 of the fourth quarter that gave the Baby Lancers a 73-66 lead.
Time was running out and SHS-AdC was staring at defeat when Araw-Araw anchored a searing 9-0 run for the Magis Eagles to snatch the lead, 75-73, with 1:46 remaining to play.
Desiderio tied the game at 76-all for the last time following a floater at the final 50.6 seconds but Araw-Araw once more scored on a lay-up that gave the Eagles a 78-76 lead with 13.7 ticks left to play in the game and never looked back.
“As a playmaker, I need to ensure that everybody will get the chance to touch the ball on offense or I could deliver the needed points for my team. On that last shot I made, I got the opportunity for that lay-up when they left me wide open. Defensively, we put a lot of pressure especially in the fourth quarter because we were trailing most of the time,” Araw-Araw told Sun.Star Cebu after the game.
Rendell Senining and Fletcher Criss Galvez helped SHS-AdC after scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively, while helping Desiderio were Escalona who scored 11 and Jun Kent Manzo III, who tallied 10 points.

Araw-araw shines brightly as Magis Eagles soar in opener
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 25, 2012 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles toiled hard at cruchtime to hack out a precarious 80-76 win over defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers and draw the first blood in the best-of-five juniors division finals of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.
Heady pointguard Arc Gabriel Araw-araw knocked in a booming 3-pointer and then hit the go-ahead basket with 13.7 seconds to go before Felixberto Jaboneta, Jr. calmly sank the insurance free throws for the Magis Eagles, who are seeking for a commanding 2-0 lead tomorrow.
The Magis Eagles, who defeated the Baby Lancers for three consecutive times already this season, took a 35-27 lead incidentally on Araw-araw's triple with 5:15 left in the second quarter, but the Baby Lancers responded with a 10-0 blast to wrest the driver's seat, 37-35.
It took the Magis Eagles a lot of patience in the entire second half as the Baby Lancers established a double-digit edge, 62-52, with 30 seconds remaining in the third period.
Henric Dawn Ochea, who was grounded by UV's porous defense, finished with only eight points but his intimidating presence at the post put some of the the Baby Lancers in foul trouble especially Ralph Dinolan.
Ochea teamed up with Jaboneta and Fletcher Galvez in patrolling the shaded lane, while Araw-araw and Giovanni Laguyo tended the backcourt with precision along with Rendell Senining, who finished with 14 points.
It was Araw-araw, however, who shone the brightest with 20 points spotlighted by a crucial trey that put the Magis Eagles in front for good, 75-73.After UV's top hitman and reigning MVP Andres Paul Desiderio knotted the count for the last time at 76-all with 50 seconds lef to play, Araw-araw capped his game-long brilliance with a short-range jumper that towed the Magis Eagles ahead for good, 78-76.
The Baby Lancers could have tied the score anew, but Ernesto Limitares committed a costly error when he stepped on the sideline. In the ensuing sequence, Jaboneta converted his gift shots to ice the match for the Magis Eagles, who survived despite a bad game from Jair Igna.
Galvez chipped in 10 markers to underscore SHS-Ateneo's balanced offensive. Desiderio paced the Baby Lancers with 31 points.
The scores
SHS-AdC (80) - Araw-araw 20, Senining 14, Galvez 10, Ochea 8, Igna 8, Jaboneta 8, Laguyo 7, Ecarma 2, Cercado 2
UV (76) - Desiderio 31, Escalona 11, Manzo 10, Dinolan 9, Limitares 6, Cabanilla 3, Canete 2, Suan 2

Leads SHS-AdC to victory in Game 1 of juniors finals; UV-SWU seniors battle starts

Game today:
Cebu Coliseum
5:30 pm – UV vs SWU (Srs.)
Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw proved to be the ray of sunlight that the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles needed when things appeared bleak.
The 5-foot-6 guard towed the Eagles to an 80-76 victory over the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers to take Game 1 of the best-of-five finals series in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. boys basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Araw-Araw, who took his talents to national juniors hoops factory San Beda for a year before making his way back to Cebu, hit one big shot after another, including the game-winning layup with 13.7 seconds left that completed his team’s comeback from a 10-point deficit in the third period.
He finished with 20 points, 11 coming in the penultimate canto.
The defending champion UV hit its stride in the third and built a 62-52 lead with just seconds remaining in that stretch.
With Dawn Ochea hobbled with foul trouble, things were looking to be on the dark side for the Eagles as they trailed, 66-73, after a runner by UV’s star and league MVP Paul Desiderio with 5:54 left.
However, Araw-Araw was unfazed as he fuelled an 8-0 run with a three-pointer. Then, after two freebies by Ochea, he hit a freethrow and followed that up with a high-looping trey from the left wing that gave the Eagles the lead, 75-73, with 1:46 left.
Desiderio tied the game at 76-all with a teardrop with 50.6 on the clock. But Araw-Araw had one last trick up his sleeve as he left his defender in the dust and banked in the go-ahead layup, that kissed the glass and in for a 78-76 tally.
UV had one last shot but Ernesto Limitares stepped on the baseline on the ensuing possession and SHS-AdC’s Janjan Jaboneta sealed the deal with two freethrows.
“Nothing is impossible. We have to stay humble and keep working hard because it’s far from over. We just have to take it one game at a time,” said Araw-Araw after the match.
Desiderio was his usual unstoppable self with 31 points but had little help from the rest of his UV teammates.
UV VS. SWU
Meanwhile, Game 1 of the best-of-five finals series between the UV Green Lancers and the Southwestern University Cobras kicks off today at the same venue.
These two teams have battled back and forth in oftentimes physical and bloody fashion in age-old grudge matches that go way back to the 1960s.
Fast forward to 2012 and another chapter is set to be forged this season as the Cobras aim to claim the title that eluded them last year while UV hopes to reclaim its place atop the league after lording it in its first 10 years of existence.
UV team manager, Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas, is confident with his team.
“You’ll see a UV team that you’ve never seen in the past few years. A team that is hungry to reclaim lost glory. We want that championship so bad that we will do whatever it takes to win,” said Gullas yesterday.
UV, SWU renew storied rivalry in local hoopdom
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 25, 2012 12:00 AM
CEBU, Philippines - Nine-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers will try to reclaim their lost glory as they take on the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in Game 1 of the best-of-five finals in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) collegiate basketball today at the Cebu Coliseum.
Showtime is set at 5:30 pm, with the Cebuano fans getting the opportunity to witness once again the most storied rivalry in the local hoopdom.
The Lancers and the Cobras are both craving for the championship having lost to the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in the past two years.
The Lancers, then mentored by Elmer "Boy" Cabahug, were dethroned by the June Mar Fajardo-led UC in the 2010 CESAFI finals, three games to one.
Last year, the Cobras bowed to the Webmasters in an epic battle that went down-the-wire until the deciding Game 5.
With UC relegated into fourth place, this year's crown is up for grabs between the revitalized Lancers and the Cobras, who are banking on their two Cameroonian recruits.
The Lancers, of course, are the heavy favorites having tamed the Cobras in their previous two meetings, but SWU coach Raul "Yayoy" D. Alcoseba is confident that they can pull one big surprise.
"Yes, we already lost twice to UV but from my experience, it doesn't mean you can't win. The finals is a different story," said Alcoseba. "All we need is one win to gain confidence. One thing for sure, they (Lancers) can't make it 3-0."
Alcoseba gamely admitted that the Lancers have the manpower advantage and a deeper bench, but he is hopeful that they could turn things around.
"With all the positions, they have the advantage. Hopefully we can reverse that," added Alcoseba, who owns two championship titles with the Cebu Doctors' College (now CDU) Stallions when CESAFI was still known as the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA) back in 1994 and 1999.
The Lancers, who also have the edge in ceiling because they have plenty to spare as far as big men rotation is concerned, have the 6-foot-7 Nigerian tower Steve Cedrick Akomo and Hernal "Wowie" Escocio to bang bodies with SWU's Justine Aboude and Benoit M'bala.
The Lancers of coach Felix "Donbel" Belano can also rely on Jerome Silva, John Michael Abad, Eman Calo, Phil Mercader and Rene Jun Saycon.
On the part of SWU, Aboude and M'bala need to draw huge support from the likes of Monbert Arong, Bonifacio Guillena III, Bernie Bregondo, Joseph Nalos, Jestoni Casquejo, Mierben Dedace, and Daryl Goloran. (FREEMAN)

40-year-old rivalry rekindled in today’s final
By Rommel C. Manlosa
Monday, September 24, 2012
THE long missed rivalry is back!
Today, the much-awaited 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) best-of-five championship series between the nine-time champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers and the finals returnee Southwestern University Cobras will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.
Expect the unexpected as both teams are raring to take the first win of the series, which offers a psychological advantage.
“In all positions they (UV) have the edge. UV always has the heart to win and hopefully we can beat that. And hopefully we can reverse the situation,” SWU head coach Raul Alcoseba told reporters.
On their past meetings this season, the Lancers had prevailed over the Cobras.
“(But) in my experience that doesn’t count. This is the finals and this is a series. For sure they cannot sweep us. All we need is just one win to get our confidence, and it can be on Tuesday (today),” added Alcoseba.
However, if there is one advantage that UV has that worried him, it was the immaturity of his team.
“That is a given fact, UV has the experience while we are immature. That factor is their biggest asset coming into this series. Hopefully, the tough times we had during the season would help mature not just the players but us as a team,” Alcoseba continued.
UV’s vast championship and collective experience is also the Lancers’ advantage as what team manager Sam-Sam Gullas acknowledged.
“UV’s experience will play a vital part in this series. And I think we really want it more. We really want to win the title that is why the school, the administration and the student body are giving their all-out support to the Lancers. And coming from two defeats after winning nine straight titles is motivation enough that would bring us back to the top,” the young Gullas stressed.
UV’s guards Phil Mercader, Emmanuel Calo and John Abad are crucial to the Lancers’ quest while SWU is also hoping Monbert Arong, Bonifacio Guillena and Joseph Nalos will also do their part in this expected full house encounter.

Unburdening the refs
By Rommel C. Manlosa
Sunday, September 23, 2012
TO save its referees from blame, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) unburdened its game officials from furious coaches and raving fans in the entire series of the 2012 Cesafi College Basketball Finals, starting Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
On his latest trip to Manila last week, commissioner Felix “Boy” Tiukinhoy Jr. accomplished one important decision – that is to seal a covenant with Manila-based referees to come to Cebu and officiate the championship series for the college division title match between the nine-time champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers and last year’s runner-up Southwestern University Cobras.
“We have decided to hire outside officials to protect the Cesafi referees, as no matter what, the losers will always blame the referees. Besides, they see the Cesafi referees day in and day out. Whereas, the Manila referees, they see them only during this championship. And it will be fair to both teams for a fresh batch of referees to officiate the championship,” Tiukinhoy told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
However, the Cesafi pool of referees will not be left to the sidelines as they still have the high school championship series, which will start today between the defending champions University of the Visayas Baby Lancers and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles at 5:30 p.m., to officiate.
Like last year, the Baby Lancers are the underdogs in this series, owing to its two defeats to the Eagles during the elimination and semifinal rounds.
SHS-AdC is very motivated and determined to win the title after being denied the title twice.
Meantime, these officials that Tiukinhoy hired to officiate the collegiate series have vast experience officiating the PBA D-League and the National Colleges Athletic Association (NCAA) tournaments.
Last year, Cesafi also hired Manila-based officials in the deciding game of the best-of-five championship series between the University of Cebu and the Cobras.
Having Manila-based officials at the start of the series is an apt decision since the warring teams have a long storied rivalry that dates back in the 60s.
