Aquino blasted for big blunder in diplomacy

Opposition lawmakers on Thursday slammed President Benigno Aquino III for the ‘monumental blunder’ of allowing Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to serve as ‘backdoor’ negotiator to China, even as Palace sources said Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario had warned the president against tapping Trillanes as negotiator, but the president ignored the warning.

House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, Zambales Rep. Milagros Magsaysay, Siquior Orlando Fua, Maguindanao Rep. Simeon Datumanong and Rodolfo Albano were one in saying that in matters of conflict or issues involving foreign affairs policies, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs should be the point man in carrying out the president’s initiatives in averting a diplomatic crisis.

Magsaysay said that the blame should fall on President Aquino, who should explain to the people why he allowed a senator to go to China and do the negotiations without proper guidance from foreign affairs officials.

“The buck stops with the President. And clearly, the diplomatic misadventures of Senator Trillanes is the handiwork of Malacanang,” Magsaysay said.

Suarez said that what Trillanes did was a slap on the face of del Rosario. He added that it demeaned the stature and credibility of the DFA chief, whose main task was to formulate and implement the government’s foreign affairs policies.

Magsaysay said that Trillanes does not have the credential, background or the position to carry out a mission that only torpedoed the government’s diplomatic initiatives.

“No well meaning government with a clear and focused diplomatic policy would ever commit such a monumental blunder,” Magsaysay said.

Backdoor negotiations are supposed to be kept secret. These are the nuances of diplomacy. The Chinese don't want to lose face in public when doing negotiations thats why they always conduct negotiations from a high position and will not appear to budge on all issues. Things are different behind closed doors when there is less pressure from losing face.

it's true that backdoor negotiations must be kept secret but it must be handled by a competent and experience person, definitely not the likes of Trillanes... and the fault is on PNoy letting this neophyte and inexperience Trillanes who doesn't have any knowledge in foreign relations.. this clearly is a slap on PNoy's weak governance to the disadvantage of the entire nation...

well, we always deserve the the kind leaders we voted to public office... and PNoy Is A Big Mistake!!!

backdoor gani, meaning there are no rules. anybody can negotiate as long as authorized. at the end of the day, it will be the president or authority of the state ang mo approve whatever has been negotiated.

so tell me, what bad has the backdoor negotiations done to our country?
