ya i think "purist" is the word
purists cringe at mistakes while liberalists are more tolerant. neither's wrong i guess. just different.
personally, i dont get bothered by incorrect english. heck, my bosses speak not-so-good english but they own companies. i may speak and write better but i just work for them. heck jud oi!
i can see why linguistic errors won't bother youOriginally Posted by rockart9
the_child, i did not even bother reading through your post. i figured it would sound the same as the first poster who reacted to 'my' thread. sorry sa flood mods, but i hadn't a chance to reply to the posters earlier. the thread is about common errors made by people when speaking english. a lot of americans make them, so these people are being a bit melodramatic by discussing elitism and purist and all that hodgepodge.
i created the thread to collect all those funny, oftentimes irritating verbal misadventures by most people as it is one of my pet peeves, incidentally. people speaking, loudly, a language that they clearly do not understand. i would prefer it if they would just speak something that they know by heart. of course that's me, and i won't apologize for it. i dont know about you. i am not saying that you should hate people who commit these boo-boos, i am asking you if there are any grammatical trespasses that gets your goat. kung wala, that is very good. you need not post a thing here.
i am not lambasting bisaya, tagalog, waray, or any other language (for that matter), just for the lovely record.
i am waray, i can speak and understand bisaya fairly well, i watch local tv (which means i get tagalog). i speak above average english, even when i can't claim perfection. i'm not even going to waste time with pompous-sounding modesty--at least on that area alone.
now if there are people out here who has any more light hearted replies to my first post, it would be really, really great. those people who did'nt feel the need to pick up their swords and be so uppity about nonexistent offences.
i am not elitist. i just know when something is right and when it's off. but like i said, (disclaimer na naman) hindi ako perpekto. heck, you can even correct my post. but when people dare correct something that doesn't need it, they don't even deserve a reply. if they needed to ask, i see no point in telling them. if you know what i mean.
on the other hand, if people would still insist on discussing nationalism and nobility and what-have-you like this is some column on a national broadsheet that is funded by the education department, i suggest they start a different thread and leave this one alone. or mods could cut this one. i don't care either way. nawalan na ako ng gana.
well, this thread started with a bit of a negative tone. i expected reactions from all corners. now, i can see that you guys are very articulate...im sure you can make good use of that ability by keeping the discussion at an intelligent level? attack the idea, not the person. its in the richness of the discussion that we learn and understand one another. i'd be disappointed (again) to have one good discussion deleted or locked just because posters cannot handle it well. sayang.
^i appreciate your sensitivity and tact, beg to differ lang ako, where i come from, there is nothing n my fisrt post that is negative, whether categorically or implied--except of course,
the nature of the subject, errors. errors are negative so i grant you that.
but i wasn't out to attack people. i dont mean to pull rank (if there's any to pull that is), but i've been a member of this forum site for almost two years, and have cultivated friendships even. and i have never. ever. ever started a cat fight--post related or personal. i am not out to get people. the way i word my post was meant to be upbeat, acidly funny, sarcastic. kung merong mga taong nasagad ang sense of right and wrong sa phrasing, na pipersonalin yung thread, then it is really their problem because let me just say this one last time: I AM NOT OUT TO GET PEOPLE. I WASNT OUT TO ATTACK ANYBODY. I AM NOT A GLUTTON FOR PUTTING PEOPLE DOWN. but god forbid if somebody started on me.
you are right, we should focus on the ideas. the idea was to post grammatical errors that you often hear or read. that make you wince. the next thing i know, i have acquired labels, people reading something about me that is not in my post, that isn't even supposed to be inferred from my post, in all honesty. whew. well what do you know.forum site freedom and power of words and all that. rant over.
I’d have to agree with Ms.Beau on this one, your post did have a negative tone (intentional or not) And to be completely blunt it did sound pompous to those of us who read it. I for one can’t stand this sort of behavior because its demeaning thus explains my reply. I must admit I was at fault for being a tad too harsh. What I should have done was ask you to explain yourself…Originally Posted by anniepetilla

Now that I’ve read everybody’s reply, I now have a clearer understanding of the situation. I certainly appreciate everyone’s opinions (good and bad) Believe me when I say that I am not out to get you or anybody. On the contrary, this thread must have been the most thought-provoking thread I’ve encountered in recent memory. To quote Ms. Beau (I’m now a fan of hers hehe),“Attack the idea, not the person. It’s in the richness of the discussion that we learn and understand one another.” And I’d prefer to leave it at that.
thought-provoking? allow me some clarifications.
a bit melodramatic by discussing elitism and purist and all that hodgepodge.
there is nothing melodramatic with that. How does one define something melodramatic especially in this case?
the way i word my post was meant to be upbeat, acidly funny, sarcastic. kung merong mga taong nasagad ang sense of right and wrong sa phrasing, na pipersonalin yung thread
upbeat, acidly, funny, sarcastic, probably that was intended but you just cant help individual interpretations. Until this post i dont think anybody took the thread personally, correct me if i am wrong.
i have acquired labels
if you were considering the label "grammar elitist" and "purist" as personally labeled to you, allow me to correct you with such a conception because those are arbitrary labels that i use to describe:
but being too bureaucratic with how english is said, especially in colloquial events
is definitely not a direct label on any certain person but rather a general class of people. well that is, if you considered those words as labels to you.
there is nothing n my fisrt post that is negative,
I grant you with that, such is why i never personally or directly labeled you as i have explained above but we just cant help individual interpretations, now could we? I guess not. That is why there is a need for clarifications. And your first post, no matter what your intention was, individual interpretations in this forum seem to drive to some common point:
ditto, The_Child. (i know the feeling. my family's that way. sige lang. ila pud na nga problema.) -jootz
@rockart9, The_Child~ please take it easy. As I posted earlier, she was posting under the influence of her emotions. She was just venting out and yes, she may forgotten to be considerate. Let's do that for her -diem
well, this thread started with a bit of a negative tone. -Ms. Beau
and the fact that she completely overlooked the irony of the situation is beyond me. -rockart
the point im making here is that, i was not being personal with those labels, but we just cant overlook the majority's impression regarding the proto-post of this thread.

i learned a lot from this topic.
Annie was just venting out... or she could've corrected those "who trespass the language". every one of them.
ganahan lang gyud sya mo note sa mga kasaypanan sa ubang mga tawo mahitungod sa "English Language". [ nakabisaya hinuon ko da, usa raba ko sa mga trespassers, what can i do? careless man gud ko usahay.]
This seems like a VERY interesting topic. so, with respect to the threadstarter and the purpose of her thread, your list please.![]()
