There is a big difference with i3 and i5.

1.) Even if it's a 3rd generation i3 laptop, you can't easily say your 3rd gen is faster against any i5.
Like any other laptop brands, you can't easily compare the performance just bec you have a msi and the other one is hp. Like Processors you don't easily compare them by Generation it was made. 3rd Generaton processors are ONLY 3-5% faster than 2nd gen. and consumes 10w less. One major thing to look out in a processors will be their "ghz".

SO Obviously if you have an i5 2nd GEN running 2.60ghz, and i3 3rd GEN running 2.40ghz = i5 WINS!

Why?

2.) i3's are dual cores with 4 hyperthreading which makes it only 2 pure cores, 2 "illusion" cores running in taskmanager.
i5's are NOT dual cores but QUAD cores with 4 hyperthreading which makes it 4 TRUE CORES running in taskmanager.
i7's are quad cores with 4 true cores running 8 hyperthreading.

3.) Processors model. They are different. The real deal is what MODEL is that laptop processor is carrying.
2nd - 3rd generation processors are made up of FOUR numbers. 2nd gen starts with 2 and 3rd gen. starts with 3.
i3 2+++ (i3 and 2, ARE ONLY THE BRAND, the next +++ will be THE MODEL)
i3 3+++

This tells the Ghz, cache, etc.


TO CONCLUDE,

i5's in most cases are faster than i3's because they are running 4 TRUE CORES/QUAD the other is just 2.
It DEPENDS ON THE "MODEL" NOT THE BRAND, not by generation it was made.

Example:

i5's 3rd gen with Clock rate of 1.8ghz. vs i3's 2nd gen CLock rate 2.60ghz. which do you think WINS?


IMHO: I would still pick i5 any day against any i3 even if its 3rd gen. bec of the 4 cores against 2.

GRAPHICS CARD wil always be at the top OVER any PROCESSORS out there.
and notebook should have a good amount of cooling factor , the higher the heat, the slower the performance it gets.
so. .

GRAPHICS CARD > PROCESSOR > COOLING FACTOR > RAM > FOLLOWED BY ETC > . . .

I agree to this, i5 is faster than i3... also i3 is dual core with 4hyper treading while i5 is pure quad core.. <= however this is only true for desktop bro.. try to search it in google, sa laptop ang i5 kai dual core ra with hyperthreading.. try to search all models sa i5 for laptop dbah its just dual core.. the only quadcore processor sa laptop is i7..

2nd gen to 3rd gen has increased performance about 5-10%... which i would say is about 0.1-.2 ghz... and 3rd gen consumes less power in full load, on idle load doesnt really make a difference... so if i5 or i3 are both dual core with hyperthreading then u can now decide just by looking at the ghz.. the only difference i guess is the turbo boost feature of i5 proces... i believe intel made it this way for mobile or laptop processors para dli kaau init, i just think so but not sure.. bsta the point is i3 and i5 are both dual core with 4 hyperthreading cores if we are talking about laptop...

also in terms of gaming bro, u dnt need quadcore power,, dual core is enough and the rest leave it to your video card... which would you choose i5 with gt550m vc? or i3 with gt660m vc? ... in these days games are dependent to videocard..

anyway hope its clear to u now that we are talking about laptops here, not desktop..

i7 = 4 cores and 8 hyperthreading - turbo boost: yes

Laptop or mobile computer:

i3 = 2 cores and 4 hyperthreading - turbo boost: no
i5 = 2 cores and 4 hyperthreading - turbo boost: yes
i7 = 4 cores and 8 hyperthreading - turbo boost: yes

but knowing this, still i5 wins even though i3 and i5 are both dual cores in laptop.. why? because i5 has turbo boost while i3 don't have turbo boost.. turbo boost improve the processors frequency for about 20-30%, anyhow u dnt need that for gaming..

so for laptop if I were to choose, i would go for i5 if I have budget.. but if I only have limited funds then it would be wise to get the i3 since if all you want is gaming i3 is sufficient enough, then difference in price is about 5-6k and thats a lot of money... but its really up to you guyz.. im just here to give you ideas...

if we are only talking about processor here with out VC, i would pick 3rd gen i3 1.8ghz.. why?? simply because it consumes less power, saves you money.. it has intel HD 4000 graphics which is two times faster then 2nd generation intel HD 3000 graphics... and intel HD 4000 graphics are far more superior than low end discrete graphics card... so you get performance plus saves you on your electric bill..

Nindot ning mga gaming laptops sa MSI. I have the GX660 and it is almost 2 years old na pero wa jud ni problema. Wa gali ni palong2x for 2 weeks straight usahay, no BSOD ever since I purchased the laptop. The cooling system is also very excellent.
