The Navy has been cleared to begin negotiations for the purchase of a multirole vessel from any of the friendly nations, Rear Admiral Alexander Pama said on Sunday.

“The latest process that we had undergone with the Department of National Defense had good results and we did not encounter anymore objections,” Pama said.

But Pama said the Navy has yet to obtain President Aquino’s approval for the purchase plan, which is part of the military’s modernization.

An MRV, which costs at least P5 billion, will serve as a mother ship equipped with state-of-the-art radars and sensors for monitoring aircrafts and patrol boats, Pama said.

According to PAF chief Lt. Gen. Lauro Catalino de la Cruz top defense officials want to request the immediate delivery of two TA-50 light attack jets from South Korea so that PAF pilots can begin training and be ready for the delivery of entire order of 24 jets by 2016.

“This is a realization of the dream we have dreamt a long, long time ago,” De la Cruz said. “That is why many of our personnel will be sent to schooling abroad for air traffic control and related courses.”

The jet’s design is largely derived from the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and they have many similarities: use of a single engine, speed, size, cost, and the range of weapons.

The TA-50 mounts a M197 20mm three-barrel cannon and a fire control radar system. It can accommodate the AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile and a variety of additional weapons can be mounted to underwing hardpoints.

Compatible air-to-surface weapons include the AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missile, Hydra 70 rocket launchers, CBU-58 and Mk-20 cluster bombs, and Mk-82, ?83, and ?84 general purpose bombs.

the SAA/LIFT acquisition is interim... all other nation pass that road before going MRF..

im just curios if PAF will get F16 since T-50 design it is closely based from KF-16

PAF knows about the need of MRF even after the cory administration kick uncle sam out of the country, the reason why we stayed with a trainer its because there was little funds coming in for modernization everything is directed to social services, and the past administration is somewhat more economically inclined... despite it... there has been a lot of SRDP initiated by some units...

just to set the information straight, most of our Planes before is paid and maintain by uncle sam in exchange we allow us bases here in philippines during the height of cold war...
