^^ i think gpu brands do not influence rendering process at all, it's more on processor brands.

mas maayo cguro mo-ingon ta "mas nice gyud ang nvidia VC for viewing rendered animations and images"

I stand corrected on this one, I thought VC ang main protagonist when it comes to rendering.

Salamat kaau sa inyung mga inputs.

GPU does matter in today's 3d rendering.

that's why Nvidia is marketing it's TESLA GPU based parallel processors

pages upon pages of reviews and technical write ups are created for this topic, it's best to read.

those are NVIDIA rendering "softwares" or "plug-ins" .yes, GPU are important to them because they are GPU "accelerated" but they are not purely processed the entire rendering by gpu . there are so many renderers out there. example; mental ray , vray, brazil for rhino etc. mental ray from nvidia will be different from scanline or vray or brazil because nvidia created them to be a perfect match to their cards.

this is my challenge, try to render using nvidia card with tesla cuda etc etc using vray and not nvidia mental ray, lets see the difference.
the point is " who will render CGI? is it the GPU or the CPU? professional GPU is just a "plus" but not required.

......with max, it depends on what renderer one will be using,

    with iRay here's a link..

hopefully this will help you guys with whether or not GPU with CUDA is needed or in any ways HELPED fasten up in rendering..

AS's idea of benchmarking GPU renders is a good one.

I thought I'd see if anybody has Max 2012 and a CUDA device. If you do, can you give this a try please, and let us know your hardware and render time?

Here's a test file I whipped together just now.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23316655/ira...hit_render.zip

This is what it should look like (although your render will be noisier, I let this one go on for a bit longer).

Just load the file and hit render, then post your render time and specs here when it finished. Let's see how much faster these GPU cards are.

My render took 3:55 with a Xeon quad-core machine with NO CUDA device, so CPU only rendering. How much quicker is a £100 gaming card? A £1000 Fermi card?

    Any takers?

EDIT: All the renders should come out identical, so posting the picture is optional."

these results suggest TS should get an nvidia with cuda, tesla etc and use iray combo

figures below show how processors affect rendering, they are using same gpu but different procie. it's expected 980 should win. i am looking at exactly same procie but with different gpu, with and without cuda which none on the list. that way we could really see how much a cuda?tesla enabled gpu affect rendering times.

anyways, with only 40k budget, TS forget GPU for now get a hardcore cpu
