Michael Spencer is an expert. One of the greatest minds in asian economy, no doubt about it. His numbers can be true, our exports have grown, GDP is going good.

But note: In politics and Economy, numbers can tell lies and can be very deceptive.

An economist can see good numbers, but the rural and urban scenes could be different. Living conditions still has not changed. Poverty, unemployment, lack of healthcare and corruption are like rusty iron fences painted with gold.

These are things one Economy expert (who's based in Hong Kong not RP), will never get to enocunter and assess.

On the other hand if we let a local based economy expert do the talking, many people here will automatically suspect bias and partial to one side..

However if we see a general consensus between the local and foreign based economists about our economy, i don't know what else to say...

Sio, pls let me add that poverty alleviation and upliftng the living conditions of each and every poor individual Filipino does not happen overnight. In China, millions are still living the same condition as with many pinoys. I happened to work in a BPO that handles credit card collections for GE and finance care for Sprint and T-Mobile, all are US based companies. It really changed my perception about the US as the land of milk and honey. I have encountered customers who can't even afford to pay $20 for their credit card or make financial arrangement for a $50 past due balance of their cellphone account!

If China has growth of 8.1 percent and the Philippines has growth of 6.4 percent how did this expert conclude that we are the best performing economy in Asia? Maybe he meant best improved economy.
in terms of growth Philippines is second only to China.. but in terms of fundamentals, Philippines is the best performing economy as of the time being..

US is a consumer economy.. how would you reconcile that with your statement.. do you mean to say, they do more saving than spending?
... you seemed to forget the many bubbles they had..
