    Cebu Coliseum

    1 p.m. – USJ-R vs. CIT-U (Jrs.)
    2:30 p.m. – UC vs. SHS-AdC (Jrs.)
    4 p.m. – UV vs. CEC (Jrs.)
    5:3o p.m. – UV vs. USC (Srs.)

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars continued to lean on their incredible tenacity on the boards and the resurgence of Abulaiz Suliman as they posted their third straight win after defeating the reigning champions University of Cebu Webmasters, 89-72, in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Suliman finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds and a block while Miguel Tabaloc added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Jaguars, who pounced on their opponent’s sudden lack of energy and focus to turn a six-point deficit in the third canto to a 62-55 lead heading to the final stretch.

UC, which fell to 1-2 (win-loss) got 20 points from Robinson Mohamad. The Webmasters missed the numbers of Brian Heruela, who was hampered by a knee injury and made just nine points.

In the juniors division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles cruised to their third straight win with a 67-44 clobbering of the Don Bosco Greywolves.

The Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens also defeated the UC Baby Webmasters, 82-78, while the Cebu Eastern College Dragons recovered from their loss to the Eagles last Friday with an 89-33 shellacking of the USJ-R Baby Jaguars.

Green Lancers rout Warriors to gain share of Cesafi lead
    By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:17 am | Monday, August 13th, 2012

The University of the Visayas Green Lancers turned in another dominant performance as they completed a 98-76 rout of the University of San Carlos Warriors in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Lancers now tote a 3-0 (win-loss) record to share the lead in the standings with the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars.

They blew the Warriors away in the second period with a 12-0 run that was fueled by baskets from Cameroonian player Steve Akomo and wily lefty guard John Abad.

Wowie Escosio topped UV with 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a block while Jerome Silva tallied 17. Akomo ended up with 12 points, eight boards and five blocked shots while Phil Mercader and Eman Calo added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

UV held a 51-32 lead at halftime as Mercader hit a layup at the buzzer.

Prized rookie Escosio imposed his will in the shaded lane as he abused the undersized USC frontline with eight straight points for a 64-38 in the third.

The Warriors had their moments of brilliance behind the play of Nilton Otida, who anchored a 13-2 run that got them within 14, 54-68. But that was all there was to it as UV ran away with the lead, which grew to a high of 28 in the fourth.

Otida led USC with 21 points while Stephen Que chipped in 17. The Warriors fell to 1-2.

In juniors play, the UV Baby Lancers and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles padded their records to 4-0 after they won over their respective opponents.

The reigning champions Baby Lancers outlasted the Cebu Eastern College Dragons, 83-72, behind the 31-point performance of MVP Paul Desiderio.

The Magis Eagles, on the other hand, destroyed the University of Cebu, 86-62, with Dawn Ochea tallying 25 points, 17 rebounds, two steals and a block. The Cebu Institute of Technology-University defeated USJ-R, 102-66.

    Wildcats pounce on rookie flaws

    By Rommel C. Manlosa
    Wednesday, August 15, 2012

ROOKIE errors helped Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats to a pulsating victory over the listless University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 79-75, for its first win in the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College basketball tournament held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

Earlier, defending champions UV Baby Lancers picked its fifth straight win following an 80-54 win over the DBTC Greywolves in the high school division.

USPF played minus two important players—forward Fritz Dajalos and swingman Earven Ferraren--who were sidelined due to injury.

With his two other reliable players recuperating from their illness, the Panthers coach gave extended minutes to his starters while sparingly giving chances to his rookies to see action.

    Strong

In contrast, coach Gilbert Demape was playing in full force with his ace player Floyd Taboada back from suspension.

As expected, the game was closely fought with neither team allowing the other to lead by as many as five points.

However, the extended playing minutes of center Jomari Sollano and Art Camello slowly took its toll when they committed their fifth foul at the 3:11 and 1:25 mark of the fourth quarter, respectively.

Their early exit came when USPF was trying to make an end-game push.

Latonio was forced to send back Lawrence Escanilla and Jayson Cando to fill the void.

However, they both committed huge blunders that allowed the loss of the Panthers.

Camello was called for a technical foul for excessive swinging of elbow at the 35.4 mark that broke a 75-all deadlock.

Taboada split the technical free throw, but redeemed himself as he drilled a basket on the bonus possession of CIT-U.

    Pressure

USPF still had the chance to put pressure on the Wildcats but Cando committed a turnover at the final 6.1 seconds mark that sealed the doom of the Panthers.

Center Allan Dimco scored the game-high 27 points and Taboada was back with a vengeance as he delivered 23 points for CIT-U while Joseph Sedurifa scored 18 points, Sollano added 15, Camello finished with 11, and James Ferraren added 10 for USPF’s third defeat in as many games.

    Webmasters defang SWU Cobras

    By Rommel C. Manlosa
    Thursday, August 16, 2012

DEFENDING champions University of Cebu Webmasters drilled 13 triples to beat the Southwestern University Cobras, 64-61, in the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the high school division, the UC Baby Webmasters routed the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, 89-61.

The Webmasters were relentless from the outside, with Quinton Brian Heruela, Robinson Mohammad, Kim Gomez and Kido Cabrera sinking their triples like cold blooded assassins.

Coach Roehl Gomez also did some crucial defensive alignment to make it hard for the taller and bigger Cobras to dominate the middle when he used Heruela to play center on defense against the brawny Cameroonian centers of SWU.

UC waxed hot early sinking six triples to lead 23-15 after the first quarter.

Heruela scored his team high 22 points, Cabrera added 13, while Mohammad scored all
his 12 points from the three point area.

Cameroonian Benoit Mbala scored the game high 26 points and Jestoni Casquejo had 14 for SWU.

    UV nabs fourth win

    By Rommel C. Manlosa
    Saturday, August 18, 2012

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers showed they have a lot of weapons in their arsenal in their 89-76 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars to get the solo leadership in the elimination round of the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) College Basketball tournament held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The Lancers, who improved to 4-0, needed just one more win of in remaining two games to take the automatic semifinals seat.

In the high school games, the (University of San Carlos) Baby Warriors handed the struggling Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons a 76-63 beating; the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers got their first win, 80-61, over the USJ-R Baby Jaguars and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles got their fifth straight win with an 81-59 stomping over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens.

Today, the USPF Panthers will try to break into the winner’s column as they play the USC Warriors in the collegiate division at 6:15 p.m. In the high school division, it will be Don Bosco Technological Center vs. USC, CEC vs. USPF and UC vs. UV.

Yesterday, the Jaguars stayed with Lancers in the first 18 minutes as they engaged the taller opponents in a brisk exchange of baskets but a a telling 10-0 run broke a 38-all deadlock for a 48-38 UV lead at the end of the first half.

Despite getting into early foul trouble, UV wasn’t hampered as the Jaguars failed to convert their free throws.

USJ-R missed 11 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and 14 of 28 overall. UV, on the other hand, also missed 14 of their 29 free throws.

USJ-R’s main problem was UV’s huge advantage in depth as they had five players scoring in double digits.

Steve Cedrick Akomo had 20 points on top of eight rebounds, while Hernal “Wowie” Escocio, Emmanuel Calo and John Abad scored 13 points each. Jerome Silva finished with 11.
