VPS is just like having your own Dedicated Private Server on a shared Hardware. You have your own OS, Root access, and can install what you want. But limitations is that your hardware resources are controlled and it has limits. (e.g. RAM of 128mb burstable to 384mb). The only thing disadvantage to this aside from the Small Hard Disk Space is the RAM because its shared. Better yet having a VPS is an advantage if you want to try out small applications that you want to run Online.
