I have to 2 forum sites. And both are using only the shared hosting from Hostgator. So far so good, no problem with the speed, uptime and customer support from the host provider.

one forum almost 300 members but around 40 active in a day. the other forum has around 700 members and 60 - 70 active members. if i could only afford to go with VPS account i would prefer to do it since its flexible, you can make the necessary adjustments on your account if the need arises. but for now both of my site havent encountered yet any issues with the shared hosting i have with hostgator.
