i heard Sigma 17-70 has nice review, im a canon user and i have Sigma 18-200 it did serve me well from my trip to midanao, negros and anywhere i go..... it failed me miserably on night shot, thats why i always bring my nifty fifty

What lens do you currently have with you? If it's an 18-55mm or some kind of zoom lens, what focal length do you normally shoot at?

If you find yourself shooting at the farthest focal length, you might want to get a prime lens, the nifty-fifty (50mm).

If you find yourself shooting at 18mm, maybe you might want to go wider and experiment with a fish-eye lens or other wide-angle zoom lenses with a similar zoom range, but better image quality.

Another advice is to borrow lenses from your friends who are photographers too. You might regret buying a lens that you didn't really need, or which limited you from shooting with your preferred style.

It really depends on what you feel comfortable with... because there will be a time when you will have that one lens and you won't even have to think about your framing, because you already know what your shot will look like.

Ideally, 18-200mm as this is an excellent travel lens and it gives you the range depending on what you are shooting at. I had one before but I realized my shooting range is around 24-70mm hence I sold it since I shoot mostly landscape.

Check out what you like shoot most often first then evaluate which range would fit your preferred photography. Since you are looking for a walk around lens, make sure your lens would have VR, OS or VC to counter camera shake when shooting hand held especially in low light conditions.
