General motorbike safety tips


A skillful rider knows that there is always more to learn, always something to improve in one's own riding skills. Here are some tips that apply both to beginners and can be a good idea to repeat for experienced motorcyclists as well.


- Wear the appropriate equipment. Consider comfort as well as safety. A shivering, cold rider has slower reactivity.

- Be visible. Bright colors or a retroflective vest helps you to be noticed in traffic.

- Inspect your motorcycle before every ride.

- When stopping at a crossing, keep checking your rear mirror. Chances are, the car behind you hasn't noticed you and does in fact not intend to stop at the crossing…

- Flash your brake light when you suspect that the driver behind you hasn't noticed that you are slowing down or stopping.

- Be aware that other vehicles have blind spots where they cannot see you.

- Give yourself and others space and time to react to anything out of the ordinary. Keep distance to the vehicle in front of you.

- Act predictably and signal your next move in advance.

- Drowsiness and fatigue can lead to dangerous situations. Take a break if you need to.

- Don't drink and ride.

- Develop and practice your riding technique. Practice braking and curve technique etc. in little trafficked areas.

- Sign up for a course. There are lots of courses out there for both beginners and experienced riders. A track course can in fact help you become a better rider in traffic as well.
