CODE GEASS is gaining popularity nowadays. abroad, at least.

from wiki:

On August 10th, 2010, a.t.b., the Holy Britannia Empire invaded Japan and conquered the country. Japan lost its freedom and rights and was renamed to Area 11, under the control of the Britannia Empire. The Japanese people are called Elevens instead and forced to survive in ghettos, while Britannians live in first world settlements.

A young boy named Lelouch, witnessing the destruction around him, swears to destroy the Britannia Empire, and seven years later, he finally obtains the power to face them and take his revenge.

what's interesting about this anime series is that although it is a sunrise (gundam seed, GS destiny) production, CLAMP (tsubasa) was the one behind the character designs. so imagine shojo characters in a mecha world.

lelouch is not your typical hero. unlike some red haired vagabond who swears to put violence aside and protect those he loves, he is cold, calculating, very machiavellian in nature. think "light" of DEATH NOTE with a more versatile power. he is a brilliant strategist, and he will mercilessly use the people around him as pawns in his grand scheme of bringing down the Empire.

in a twist of fate, lelouch is given the power he needs to accomplish his goal; he is given a "geass" (which means "contract" in irish). using this power, he can manipulate those around him. all he has to do is look the person in the eye and give out an order. if he commands a person to "die" then that person will do it with relish.

the funny thing is, lelouch is a Brittanian. his best friend (suzaku) who is japanese, however, joins the Empire to "bring it down from the inside" although most of the time he just contradicts himself. suzaku pilots the 7th generation mech called "lancelot"

all in all, it is a pretty cool anime. a breath of fresh air, if you ask me.
