A clearly affected Toni Gonzaga defended her controversial statements about Lady Gaga, which unleashed a firestorm of Toni-bashing on Twitter.
“I believe I merely stated my personal opinion that’s why I said that it’s ‘my personal opinion.’ I’m not convincing anyone or convincing or forcing anyone to agree with me because I was just asked [about it] and that’s how I feel, what I feel at the moment,” she said at a press conference on May 23 naming her Coke Zero’s newest Brand Ambassador.
In the May 20 episode of “The Buzz,” the talk show Toni co-hosts with Boy Abunda and Charlene Gonzales, Toni weighed in on the controversy that swirled around the Manila shows of Lady Gaga, which ended successfully at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday and Monday.
Toni, ‘a hyprocite,’ said netizen
“Personally, I liked Lady Gaga before, especially yung first song pa lang n'ya,” she said during the TV show. “Pero eventually, nung napansin ko na medyo nga nagkakaroon ng double meaning yung mga succeeding songs niya , I stopped listening to her music."
Her statement earned the ire of many people, who took to Twitter to call her a hypocrite because she performed Lady Gaga’s hit, “Poker Face,” on ABS-CBN’s “ASAP” in 2009. A netizen said she espoused an “antiquated brand of morality,” while others criticized her shows when compared to Lady Gaga’s.
During the Coke Zero press conference, Toni, who appeared uncomfortable, made jokes about how the media wanted to ask her about “chismis” and then half-jokingly thanked a reporter who asked an unrelated question because members of the media wouldn’t stop asking her about what she said.
‘Respect my opinion’
“I don’t feel like I judged anyone because I merely said my general statement on things and that’s just how I feel about it and I think that we should all just respect each other’s opinion like how I respect your opinion towards me,” she added.
She also said that she was “not comfortable” about “some of what she (Lady Gaga) does.”
The general controversy surrounding her Manila concert was not lost on Lady Gaga herself who tweeted: “And don’t worry, if I get thrown in jail in Manila, Beyonce will just bail me out. I love it here!”
