World's First Battery Powered by Paper

Sony has recently announced it managed to come up with a battery powered by paper. However, the whole process is more complex than simply using a standard paper.

The batteries developed by the Japanese tech giant make use of enzymes in order to break down the glucose found in the cellulose of the paper (which by the way is made of wood pulp fibers).

It would be interesting to note that Sony was able to demonstrate its bio-battery. The demo took place at the Eco-Products exhibition in Tokyo. During the presentation the paper was placed into a mix of water and enzymes. After a couple of minutes the liquid started generating enough power to activate a small fan.

After enzymes broke down the paper, they were left with sugar that was produced from cellulose. Then they were able to process the sugar to produce hydrogen ions and electrons. The latter then went through an outer circuit to produce power. Mixed with oxygen in the air, the hydrogen ions were then able to create H2O.

"This is the same mechanism with which termites eat wood to get energy. Bio batteries are environmentally friendly and have great potential as they use no metals or harmful chemicals," explained Chisato Kitsukawa, a PR manager at Sony

New Touch Sensing Technology from Disney Research

A team of researchers at Disney Research came up with a simple, and yet rather complex, use of capacitive touch sensing.

The company unveiled a very intriguing video in which it demonstrated the innovation.

To be able to achieve their goal, Disney Research collaborated with Carnegie Mellon University. It used a "novel Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing technique" that can track many different signal frequencies simultaneously.

Due to the fact that the tissues in a human body have different capacitive properties, it is possible to tell what part (or parts) of the body a person is using and even how these parts move.

The technology can even detect when a person moves their arm, for example, in water.

It is worth mentioning that the gesture recognition technology shows 99 percent accuracy.

Check out the video below to get more information about the technology

Synergy Hopes to Bring Its Futuristic Fuel-Efficient Aircraft to Life

Synergy designed an aircraft concept that, according to the company, is 10 times more efficient and 10 percent less costly than its counterparts.

The project was meant to remain that way until its fans made the company to reconsider its decision. Now Synergy is just $65,000 away from turning its dream into reality. This money will be enough to take the project to its final phase.

The most eye-catching feature from the concept is its double-box wing and tail. The design looks futuristic and very nice, and according to the developers of the project, the body of the aircraft and its wing will lead to a dramatic decrease in drag, which in its turn will allow the plane to register 10 percent fuel economy.

Will all of its features, Synergy, if built, will become a quit, spacey (for a small plane) and safe jet that is also cheaper and faster.

Currently the company managed to create a 25% scale flying model. In order to build a full scale plane they require funding.
