there's a lot of choices for your budget. saw some good ones for around 4~6k.

I know that Canon, Samsung, and Sony have service centers here. Not sure about the others. Nikon just opened one up recently.

Li-ion batteries last very long but extra batteries cost a lot. regular AA batteries last a 100~200 shots but when you're traveling you can grab them anywhere.

SD cards are more of the norm now and cheap. you can also use them if ever you move up to entry level dSLRs.

look for a cam with a good zoom range... do not base zoom ranges on digital zoom... always consider optical zoom only. digital zoom will just blow up the pixels.

if you like to shoot macro consider the minimal focusing distance... how close you can get and the camera can still focus.

for video check that frame rates are around 29~30 frames per second. 15 fps is somewhat bearable but choppy. also nothing smaller than 640x480. some cameras will not zoom when recording while some cameras will zoom but cut out the audio (or else the sound of the zoom mechanism will be picked up). there are some cameras now that can zoom with audio still intact. check youtube for sample videos taken with a camera you're considering.

see what's with-in your budget and fits your needs then check the reviews. go to shops and ask to see the camera and if the hold and layout of controls is good for you. if they offer a battery take a few test shots to check shutter lag.

here's are few good sites for reviews
