KINGS GET BACK AT BEERMEN
Dynamite outscores The Spark but Caguioa has last laugh
Friday, 10 November 2006
You just can only keep a natural scorer bridled for so long.
After opting to let his teammates do the scoring in the early goings, Mark Caguioa clustered 23 of his 28 points in the second half and lead Barangay Ginebra to a 92-87 revenge win over San Miguel Beer Friday evening in the Talk N Text-PBA Philippine Cup at the packed Araneta Coliseum.
“He sacrificed himself at the start to give the other guys the chance to get their rhythm,” said Kings head coach Jong Uichico of his ward who flirted with a triple double with nine rebounds and seven assists.
“He knew that in the end, the ball will get to him and that’s what’s good about him. He’s now learning more how the game should be played,” Uichico added.
"The Spark" was at his hottest during a two-minute span in the fourth quarter when he scored seven straight points – including a triple that snapped a 0-of-11 shooting from behind the arc dating back to their last game – in a 9-0 run that yanked Ginebra out of a close 79-77 count.
His steal off Wesley Gonzales led to a Ronald Tubid breakaway that sealed it for Ginebra 92-85, only 5.5 ticks left.
At the end of a game watched by close to 15,000 paying patrons, the third-most in the conference, the Kings bounced back from a heartbreaking 97-101 overtime loss to the Beermen the first time they met last October 22 and an even sorrier 84-88 loss to defending champion Purefoods Chunkee last Sunday behind more than 16,000 fans.
In the process, Ginebra improved its record to 6-3 and could even gain a share of second-running spot should 6-2 Red Bull loses to Air21 Saturday in Legazpi City.
Uichico also gave credit to his other players.
“They found a way. The teams struggled offensively at the start, but in the end this team gutted it out,” Uichico also said.
The loss ended SMB’s tournament-best winning streak at five, dropping the Beermen to a 5-4 slate.
“Dynamite” Danny Seigle won out in scoring with fellow former Rookie of the Year awardee Caguioa with a conference-high-tying 33 points to go with 16 rebounds, also a gamehigh. But only he and Olsen Racela were the only ones who kept SMB’s hopes alive, bringing their team from 76-86 to within 85-88 in the final 18.6 seconds.
Seigle, who came into the game averaging 21.7 points, already had 16 at the half and was chiefly responsible in keeping SMB’s head above water despite of the crowd favorites’ repeated surges.
The 6-foot-6 forward combined with Racela, Dorian Pena and Romel Adducul as they gave the Beermen a 22-17 lead after the first quarter that proved to be a luxury in what would turn out to be a very close contest.
Hatfield himself was no slouch, already notching a double-double with 11 points and as many rebounds in his first 17 minutes of action that kept Ginebra within 34-37 after 24 minutes.
Pena’s short stab off Seigle’s assist made it a 48-44 count, but that was quickly razed when Mark Macapagal boomed in a triple and Mike Holper completed a three-point play, capping an 8-0 surge that made it 52-48.
Then the unexpected happened. The Beermen, a 67 percent free throw shooting team, missed eight straight free throws, including two each by Racela and Ildefonso, and 6-of-14 in the final 5:11 of the quarter.
Hontiveros also missed two straight, making SMB sink only 10-of-21 charity attempts for the period, a very far cry from its 8-of-10 clip in the first two quarters.
His players’ free throw shooting woes so miffed coach Chot Reyes that he ordered them to take practice shots from the stripe right after the quarter ended.
It mattered little as momentum was by then clearly on Ginebra’s side and never waivered with Caguioa making sure of that. (NCo)
