Default Battle of Yultong Bridge (Philippines vs China - Korean War)

A little info about Filipino fighting skills..

    Remembering the Korean War
    By Ramon Farolan

The most dramatic engagement of Filipino troops in the Korean War was the battle of Yultong Bridge on April 22-23, 1951. Capt. Conrado Yap, commander of a tank company, and one of his junior officers, Lt. Jose Artiaga Jr., along with 41 enlisted personnel, perished in action against the enemy who suffered heavy casualties -- about 600. Captain Yap was awarded the Medal of Valor, the highest honor our nation can bestow, while Lieutenant Artiaga won the Distinguished Conduct Star (DCS) for “conspicuous gallantry and courage in the face of overwhelming enemy forces at Yultong.”

"Despite the success of the counter attack LTC Ojeda found himself with a major problem on the morning of April 23rd; his unit was completely surrounded by the Chinese due to the withdrawal of the units positioned to his left and right flanks that night. Being a soldier from an island nation can’t help but think that LTC Ojeda must have found it a tad bit ironic that from his battalion’s fortified ridgeline position they found themselves as literally a Philippine island in the middle of a sea Chinese infantry swarming past them. However, to hold this Filipino island, the 10th BCT had 10 soldiers killed, 14 missing, and 26 wounded in action after the battle that night, which wasn’t to bad of a result considering how out manned the battalion had been."

Not bad for 900 Filipino soldiers against 40,000 Chinese, and according to this (The Unknown Gazette: Philippines in the Korean War (60th Anniversary)), the Chinese lost 500 men.

The Battle of Yultong, also known as the Battle of Meiluodong, was a battle of the Korean War. It was fought between elements of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army 44th Division and the Filipino 10th Battalion Combat Team (BCT) at the north of Yeoncheon during April 22–23, 1951.

As part of the First Chinese Spring Offensive, the Chinese 44th Division attacked the US 65th Infantry Regiment of the US 3rd Infantry Division near Yeoncheon on the night of April 22. The Filipino 10th BCT, part of the 65th Infantry Regiment, was soon trapped at the Yultong area by 23:00. Although the 10th BCT had lost all contacts with the outside world, the Filipinos held their position until the Chinese stopped their attacks on the morning of April 23. The 10th BCT's action at Yultong allowed the US 3rd Infantry Division to successfully withdraw from the battlefield.

People seem to forget that the Chinese were NOT after the Filipinos here--they were chasing down the 65th IR "Borinqueneers" of the US 3rd Infantry Division. Ergo, we were overrun and thus not deemed a significant threat. Yes, we did kill off a few PLA, but then with 40,000, what's 600-800 casualties? That's less than 3% loss. The Chinese weren't "forced" to pull out of the area because they "lost" the battle--they left because the delay allowed the 65th IR to escape, so there was no reason to hang around anymore. I used to regularly play the Korean Campaign via hex-based wargaming, and at grand-strategic scale, this battle isn't even reflected in the overall campaign because it was too small to matter in simulating final outcome based on VP's (victory points).
