Depends on what you think you want design-wise, your budget, your style (e.g. indie movie filming, macro photography, portrait, wildlife photography, etc), and the portfolio you aspire to create. For filming, I suggest getting something that has a flip-out monitor, like a Canon 60D or a 600D, since some scenes require difficult angles. For noob photography, you could start with a Nikon D90 or D50 since it has more presets and lesser advanced settings, so as not to confuse you, and besides, it's cheaper.
For reference, I started out with a Canon 7D, which is a professional camera (which back then was a nightmare to use in my opinion) then tried Nikon D50 borrowed from a friend just for the sake of exploring Nikon, since I was a fan of Canon, and used it for only nearly 3 months. Today, I use a Canon Kiss X5, which is a Japan-made version of a Canon 600D (aka Canon Rebel T3i in Canada), since I am into filming. Just imagine a Japanese Manual
Thanks for the reply After doing some research and with a little help from your input, I think I'm gonna go with the Canon 600D. It's perfect for my budget and for my style which is more into filmmaking. My only concern is the durability of the articulating screen. But anyway, It's not that big of a concern.
By the way, are there any differences between the Japan-made version and the Taiwan-made version? besides the Japanese Manual
It is durable; they don't use typical flexes. Also, based from internet reviews, normal flipping will not damage the screen hinge as long as you don't impact the open screen on a hard surface, causing breakage and disconnection. Canon manufactures the 600D in Taiwan; I don't think there are differences with the way they manufacture these models since it is the same set of machines that makes them, technically speaking.
