Default MERGED: North Korea Rocket Test

WASHINGTON -- Debris from a rocket launch planned by North Korea next month could cause casualties, a senior U.S. military official said Wednesday.

Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asia-Pacific Security Affairs Peter Lavoy said North Korea has indicated the rocket will be launched southward, but the U.S. lacks confidence about the rocket's stability and where the impact will be.

He said it is probably intended to land somewhere close to the Philippines or maybe Indonesia. He said South Korea and the Japanese island of Okinawa could also be affected.

    Facts:

    a) This is an orbital launch--if the launch proceeds normally, the only danger will be from slight deviations in trajectory, leading to the 2nd stage falling somewhere near the vicinity of the Philippines

    b) The damage that will be inflicted by the debris is slightly overrated. The 2nd stage, which is expected to impact in the sea near northeastern Luzon, is just around 1 meter in diameter and about 10 meters long. If it hits land, it will affect an area only immediately around it, which is a radius of about 20-30 meters. Since the 2nd stage gets detached when it runs out of fuel, there will be NO EXPLOSION when it hits the sea or the ground.

Thus like I said, medyo overrated ang reports, and the United States of course is doing its bit of anti-NOKOR propaganda just to show that "KAMI RA ANG PWEDE MAG ROCKET-ROCKET UG SATELLITE UG KAMONG MGA KOMUNISTA DILI PWEDE!" *shakes head*

The second stage is that part in the middle with the NOKOR flag on it--kana ang mag-impact close to Luzon, but in the sea, not on land (if all goes well).

Lage... Ma klaro man nga ang US nangusog against sa North Korea but it's for a purpose man cguro. Katawa lang ko sa last part nga "North Korea has vowed to go forward with the launch. It says the satellite it sends into space will estimate crop production and analyze natural resources" Char!
