Default MSI's R7970 Lightning lives up to the name with 1800MHz core o/c

MSI certainly wasn't kidding anyone with all the marketing hype it ran with to put its Radeon R7970 Lightning graphics card up on a pedestal, as Swedish overclocking pro Elmor demonstrated when pairing up this lovely highly non-reference HD 7970 with liquid nitrogen cooling measures.
Elmor wasn't afraid to go to extremes with the card and pumped a whopping 1.7V into it (which it surprisingly sustained without demise) and then proceeded to reach for the skies in the clocks department.
The end result saw the card thumping along at an incredible 1800MHz core clock rate, while the memory was pushed to an equally staggering 1925MHz memory clock (equating to 7.70GHz effective and a massive 370 Gb/s of memory bandwidth on tap). With that in place, stability was the next point of concern; alas there were no dramas with a 3DMark11 result obtained of P15035 (Performance preset) in conjunction with a Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition clocked at 5207MHz and 4GB (4x1GB) of DDR3 at 2314 MHz sitting on MSI's Big Bang XPower II motherboard.MSI's custom PCB certainly looks to have paid off in providing a real treat for overclocking buffs alike. Give it a few weeks or so and we'll no doubt be hearing of even higher clock rates achieved.
