tolstoi: i agree with Ian. try using a flash to make the light on the face more even and it will also give you catchlights on the eyes of your subject. you can soften your built-in flash by placing a couple of tissue paper or a bond paper in front of your flash.

fix the hair...direct the subject (mura man siya di ganahan pa picture hehehe)...
use defused fill flash...give it a bit of catchlight wouldnt be so bad...
btw, whats that red glow from the bottom...its out of place from the over all picture.
notice the shadow below the nose...unsightly (fix with defused fill flash)

thanks kaayu sir benj & sir mark for the PRO advice

    - yes the catchlight..this was the first thing that came to my mind when i took the first shot (w/ buit-in flash fired), but the result was not dramatic coz of the harsh fill..i'll take note of using tissue paper/bondpaper to soften the flash next time.

    - the hair & mood of the subject..yes it needs a lil bit of hair fixing (haven't notice that before)..and some subject direction as well

    - the red glow may have come from the reflection of the box below..i'll take note of this next time.

on the side note...i'll gather more learnings from the istoryan PROs before posting in PiPHO..grabe kaayu mo dala ug criticism c Dave_D..i dunno if he's a pro or what..any1 know this guy?

Dave_D or Dave Deluria, I believe, is a pro. however, he has been criticized for making harsh comments when doing a critique of someone else's work.

Here's what I learned, different people have different taste. Some people might like rules being broken, others may not. What matters, at this point, is that you are satisfied with the result of your work. It's your artwork, it's supposed to be personal. Now, if you're doing a shoot for someone else, like a client for example, then take the criticisms lightly and try to be patient enough to improve your work.

yeah i know him hehehe...dont mind him so much...take it lightly lang...dont worry bout it...its thru comments from others where we can improve and learn faster

here's a shot i took at the mall yesterday...resized and uploaded. no other changes
    1/40 ISO1600 f4
notice the catchlight...its brings out the eyes
if i had another chance in taking this picture i would have moved the subject back and to a place where the lighted tree wont be in the shot.
unfortunately the stuff on the other side was worst so i took the lighted tree composition instead. hehehe.
