I think there is a reason why parents drag their children to such kind of gyms. It's not really to let them learn martial arts and how to fight but I think its more of the discipline and character issue. Dako kaayo kaayo ug matabang ang martial arts sa pagdevelop sa character labi na sa discipline, obedience, perseverance, determination, etc. Murag 2 in 1 na bale, they learn how to fight which is very practical and at the same time they develop the values that they need in life. If you notice, kanang mga maayo na kaayo nga martial artists are very disciplined and their lives are well ordered.

Tinuod bro... Usually, if mo school ka ug kanang karate, aikido, taekwondo, or any professional/sports-type martial arts maka learn manka ug patience and sportsmanship. Like mga sparring sessions or tournament. Instead nga mo init ang imong ulo, relaxed nuon mong duha. In the real world, even if brown or black belter naka, maglikay nuon ka ug away then ma pasensyoso naka.

But, mao lage. Not at all times mag expect ta nga ang atong ka engkwentro kay sports minded og professional thinking pod. What if imong kontra kay mga snatcher nga manuyupay/manunggabay, or mga rapist... naana silay killer instict unya kita kay na anad manta tudluan ug values and non-lethal combat. In the end, possible alkansehon ta.

Kung atong purpose kay "life and death situation" self defense, it is extremely necessary nga we go on heavy offensive actions. Break the nose bridge and hitting the groin are one but a few examples that are important for survival in extreme cases.

that's one more thing i forgot to point out diay bro...kasagaran mga practitioners ug martial arts taas kaayu ug pasensya maskin tudlo tudloon na sila or i-provoke na ug maayu, dili ra gihapon mulihok..naa koy nakit-an na youtube clip Most Daring - Fighting Back series, naay isa ka segment nga ang attacker nisulod sa ilang gate gi confront ang papa, wala ra jd ang papa maskin gitukmod2 na siya; iya ra gibabagan ang main door sa ilang balay; sus ang bully kay nanghagis nman ug sugod gi pangtumba ilang trashbin(making a mess sa place); one shot ra lagi sa papa kamang2 paatras gawas sa ilang balay...LOL

but depende man na sa situation pd nuon bro, if kanang provoke2/shove2 ginagmay okay pa na ug pasensya or likay...pero if imo attacker gani is really out for blood, then no choice jd ka but to disable/disarm the guy at all cost...it's your life at stake naman gd...IMO

I hope this isn't too late but I agree that most martial arts are not meant for fighting, only for self-defense. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that the TS is looking one for film shooting, yes?

Friends have asked me if they could feature several kung fu and wu shu skills for "fight scenes" sa ilang "school project". If it's martial arts for show lang, you can always try to copy moves from movies and if you're looking for one to really defend yourself gyud, might as well look for those empty-handed self-defense moves because face it... if hold-up.an ka, the holdaper won't wait for you to take out your arnis or Dao.

The best martial arts defense is always surprise.
