Major oil players cut LPG prices by 50¢

Major petroleum players rolled back the prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) products by 50 centavos per kilogram effective yesterday.

Petron Corp., the country’s largest oil refiner, initiated the LPG price cut saying the reduction reflects the drop of contract price of LPG in the international market.

Other oil players, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., Chevron Philippines Inc., and Total Philippines, were forced to follow suit and cut down the prices of their LPG products.

The reduction in LPG contract prices was anticipated with the end of the winter season.

Petron public affairs manager Virginia Ruivivar said the drop in LPG contract prices would translate to P1 per kilo reduction.

"We may implement another 50 centavos per kilo (rollback) within the month," Ruivivar added.

Department of Energy (DOE) director for oil industry management bureau Zenaida Monsada said their monitoring of oil price movements indicates the stability of the price of cooking gas this month.

Under a deregulated industry, DOE is confined to monitoring functions and is prohibited from interfering in market forces. This means it can no longer dictate market prices.

Oil players roll back price of LPG by 50¢ per kilo

The price of liquefied petroleum gas or cooking gas went down by another 50 centavos per kilo with the further drop in the LPG contract price in the world market.

For Petron Corp.’s Gasul, the price cut took effect at midnight. "This is the second rollback in LPG in less than a week," Petron public affairs manager Virginia Ruivivar said. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. made the same announcement.

The last time oil firms reduced LPG prices was on Feb. 8. Aside from Petron and Shell, other major oil players are Caltex and Total Philippines.

LPG prices to drop further this month

Consumers should expect the price of cooking gas to further dip this month because of the continued softening of the world market contract price for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a ranking energy official said.

“The Department of Energy [DOE] is expecting a reduction in the prices of LPG for the month of March.” Raphael P.M. Lotilla, DOE secretary, said on Wednesday.

He added that the contract price for LPG, which is set on a monthly basis, for the month of March went down by $20 to $506 per metric ton from $526 per metric ton in February.

“We are looking at a price reduction in March of around P1 a kilogram or P12 a kilogram for an 11-kilogram cylinder, vat inclusive.” He added.

Data from the DOE shows that the average price of an 11-kilogram cylinder of cooking gas has been averaging between P443.48 and P515 in Metro Manila.

This was the third straight month contract prices have declined after going up by as much as $58 in December 2006. This was recorded at the peak of the cold season for other countries, which has abated since then. Couple with the continued strengthening of the local currency the price of cooking gas has since constantly decreased.

^^^ That's good news to us.

Imagine a reduction in LPG prices despite the rising prices in the world market. It really looks like the stronger peso works in our favor. Surely, the trickle down effect of the vibrant economy is very much evident in this news.

Maybe we can expect more of this in the near future.
