Fixing our country: Where did we go wrong?

Where did we go wrong? The list is so long... from NOT patronizing local products, NOT touring our own country, to losing our national pride, plus a whole lot more. All of these say one thing though, we have lost our love for our own country. If we want to move forward, we need to get our patriotism back.

Look at all the countries mentioned in that article, talk bad about their country in their country and you will almost certainly get beat up if they overhear you... that is if you are lucky not to get killed.

I seem to be very disagreeable with a protectionist stand as it destroys the consumer base of the country by increasing the prices for basic goods and services... We have been meddling with the free market for so long, the government is inch by inch strangling the consumer base by additional taxes, inflationary taxes, permits, etc... We have tried to solve each problem by more regulations, i think its time to deregulate and let the free market function on itself...

I don't think being patriotic means crippling the free markets. I guess we should include in our educational system the psychology of loving our own. There is nothing wrong with that. I never mentioned that we should "force" our people to buy local. Our government can, however, accord the same or more privileges or support to local businesses in the same way they give these to multinationals.

I get your point.... but you cannot afford any privileges without spending tax money to give local businesses a competitive edge against foreign businesses... the processes of giving such privilege spawns corruption, a potential power for abuse by politicians... The government should not interfere in giving privileges nor giving disadvantages to any business entity, be it foreign or local... Let the competitive capitalism work...The best quality at the most affordable price should be rewarded by consumers...

At the very least level the playing field. I think we both can agree to that.If we all love our country, corruption will automatically go down to a manageable level. You must look at the bigger picture. With patriotism, a lot of possibilities will open up for our country. Sadly, we fail to see that or are forced by necessity not to.

I get your point.... but you cannot afford any privileges without spending tax money to give local businesses a competitive edge against foreign businesses... the processes of giving such privilege spawns corruption, a potential power for abuse by politicians... The government should not interfere in giving privileges nor giving disadvantages to any business entity, be it foreign or local... Let the competitive capitalism work...The best quality at the most affordable price should be rewarded by consumers...

i think the present administration should consider the way Obama handle their goverment i mean one example is they dont really focus much on the previous adminstration but merely moving forward doing better things for the country... just my 2 cent...

but here in the Phil its the other way around... SHOWBIZ!!!

I don't know how the government can level the playing field without doing some injustice on others...patriotism is not the highest political attainment, its liberty... that is my way of bring patriotic, liberty for all filipinos... Japanese are very patriotic, they patronize their own products but they have fallen grace from the capitalistic market...having a recession for more than 20 years, high inflation rate and high costs of living...their"patriotism" had created political uncertainties for 20 years...

I strongly advise against that...obama contributed great disaster to the entire world economy by spending his way from financial woes, thereby printing more money and causing great instability to the dollar currency... Obama doesn't have any competence, just like or current president...if obama is our politician, he can be categorized as the very essence if this word "trapo."

Let's not forget the countries who have been successful... China, Vietnam, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, Canada, Australia, among others... the citizens in these countries are overly patriotic and proud. They employ some level of protectionism and even clamp down on some civil liberties in exchange for order and they are doing good.

A free market, if done wrong will lead a nation down to a sinkhole... a protectionist system, if done wrong will also lead a nation to a sinkhole. Not one system is perfect but one thing is certain though, if we put our country into our hearts, great things "can" happen.
