I'm now thinking about the Sigma, pero wala daw siya'y nindot nga performance on low light conditions, it'll still be difficult to shoot Magpies and Wood peckers kay murag kanunay naas ngitngit nang mga langgama pero on a terrain jud or tree tops nindot ang 150-500, you'd still be going over 6.3 man mag 7-11 man japon
yup lisod2x jd ang 6.3 in lowlight conditions. Pero I managed to focus into it using the override manual focus. In some conditions nga medyo ngit2x, gamit naka sa flash nimo with Better Beamer.

    boss pepponeskie,
I guess its better to get the canon 400mm... if you happen to know Bobby Kintanar also a fellow birder (and from Cebu also) he may of great help and could advice you since you are on the same system... I remembered him mentioning that the 400 is a good lens paired with a 60D (he chose 60D from the 7D from certain reasons especially with weight and AF)... 400mm is a good lens when doing some birds in flight shots due to weight except for IS... I am still stuck with my old 170-500 Sigma which I will surely upgrade once I am capable but for now I just have to make the best out of it...

here's a review from Mark Itol and just scroll around the PBPF site for other reviews... I guess Romy has a review of the 400 somewhere....... P.B.P.F. - EF 400mm f/5.6 L - wide open vs. f/8

salamat sa advice boss recon25. I got the Sigma already, pero sige lang tanawon lang nko ang mga shortcomings nako ani nga lens, before mo decide ko nga mo upgrade/change. Anyway, I'm still a newbie pa sa birdphoto. But, in my teen years I used to hunt birds sa Bohol, hehehhe. But now, convert nata, shoot birds with a camera na.

with the canon, I need a shutter speed not below 1/400 but with the sigma it has a 4-stop OS.
For bird's in flight you will need a shutter speed of 1/400 or faster.

For stationary birds you may need IS but you will probably be shooting with a tripod anyways. So IS is less needed.

In terms of popularity here are the lens owned by most Filipino bird photogs

    1) Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens
    2) Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens
    3) Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM
    4) Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM
    5) Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
    6) Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM lens
    7) Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM lens
    8) Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM

I only know of 1-2 local bird photogs who shoot with Sigma. I am not being compensated by Canon in mentioning this. I like helping people avoid buyer's remorse.
