these two movies are definitely in the top 10 for 2011. I highly recommend you watch them.

OK lang. Not that great though. Taas2x kug expectations aning mga salidaa, pero they ended up murag overhyped for me especially 50/50. Maski ang "Nadir & Simin: A Separation" mas ganahan ko (though they're not in any way comparable to each other) nya still I think "A Separation" was not that great.
Recommend lang ko these films na para nako this year's best & if you get a chance to watch them then you should:
The Skin I Live In (Almodovar, 2011)
Drive (Refn, 2011)
We Need to Talk About Kevin (Ramsay, 2011)
Midnight in Paris (Allen, 2011)
13 Assassins (Miike, 2010)
Poetry (Lee, 2010)
Not for everyone's tastes but highly recommended: Tree of Life (Malick, 2011), Meek's Cutoff (Reichardt, 2010), Melancholia (von Trier, 2011), Le Quattro Volte (2010)
And I didn't think "Martha Marcy May Marlene" was that great, it's another overhyped performance (Olsen) & the direction and writing were kinda poor. Also overhyped for me: Beginners & Submarine, almost the same themes and similar styles.
I wish we can get Hugo (Scorsese), I'm dying to see this in theaters but I'm afraid will be eclipsed by the local films from the MMFF
Nindot ug storya ang Warrior. 2 thumbs up!
bai BertR, so far, sa mga taw (kanang salig ku sa ilang comments when it comes to movies) ikaw pa akng first nailhan wala kaau ganahi. pero dli man sad jd tika ma pugus nga maganahan. hehe. maybe dli lang imong taste. and maybe biased sad ku gamay kai ganahan ku sa mga actors. pero para nako these 2 movies kai bests of the year jd. dli man jd kaau ku hilig ug drama (syempre, lalaki action jd usually ganahan) pero para naka well told story kaau ang 50/50.
sa imung gi suggest, midnight in paris kai nindot btaw. lingaw, kalma and simple. kita pd ku anang uban and agree ku, good watch sila. ang aku wala nakit-an kai aku nang gi watchlist. hehe. ang ako jd wala nasabtan kai ang Drive. bsag aku papa nga movie critic kaau, wala sad kaau xa ka g unsa'y nka nindot. then again, basin dli mao amung taste.![]()
Ahoi osimac93! I'm not saying nga bati nang mga salidaa and there's no need for you to convince me to like them because I do like them. They have great stories it's just the execution ug technicality side ang wa kaayo nako ganahi and yes it's just a matter of taste.. hehe
Regarding Warrior akong wa ganahi kaayo kay the fact nga it's overlong para nako by about 30-45 minutes. Kinahanglan pa maabot halfway through the movie para lang maabot sa "meat" sa story katong actual UFC fight kung kanus-a pud ni-resurface ang ilang past. Naa may gitawag ug "not a single shot wasted," nya sa Warrior kay murag wa gi apply.
Mas interesting unta to na POV. Although naay glimpse gamay katong end part, nya nindot kaayo pagka deliver ni Nolte pero kuwangan ra. Then para nako murag mas realistic cguro kung si Tommy (Tom Hardy) to ang ni away ni Koba kay si Tommy muy mas kusgan. Anyways, mga ing-ana nga rason, hehe
Then about 50/50 I cannot comment on the source material kay based man to true story sa writer nga si Will Reiser nga migo ni Seth Rogen in real life. But the direction, writing, cinematography cheapen the whole movie.
Mao I would recomment if wapa ka kita "We Need to Talk About Kevin," they're not the same movies pero they share the same characters nga murag end of the world na nila, pero sa "Kevin" mas definite ang technicality like acting, direction, cinematography, ug writing nga parts.
Ambot lang if ka-G bakas akong gipanulti.. haha.. pero sa 50/50 man gud di ka kaingon nga even the major aspects sa salida kay well-thought out as compared sa "Kevin" nga para nako 50/50 is very forgettable.
Midnight in Paris is not Woody Allen's best pero it's a good Allen movie. The script is very good, the characters are awesome, ug ang mga literary characters especially if you're familiar with them, Bunuel, Dali, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, etc kay added great touch. And there's great cinematography and musical score.. haaayyy
You know what ang ganahan kaayo nako sa DRIVE kay ang COLORS! Kung familiar kas mga salida ni Nicolas Winding Refn you would know nga colorful gid iyang mga salida ug iyang gamiton ang iyang cinematography "to do the talking." Pero sa Drive mas highlighted for me ang colors.
And the fact nga iyang main character is a man of few words, the colors actually do the talking. Like for example, iyang jacket which is white, with black lining nga murag hidden underneath. It suggests nga si "Driver" has an upfront character nga buutan sige rag smile pero underneath he can kill and without remorse. And then there were solid subdued colors in the beginning nga concrete na nag represent sa characters. Like blue for Gosling, Maroon for Mulligan.
Nya when Mulligan entered Gosling's life he is surrounded by green, green trees, green light sa sakyanan due to the traffic lights, etc. but when the story shifted to something nga maka guba sa balance katong ni-sulod na ang character sa husband, nanay mga print patterns gi introduce like sa table cloth, print sa water glass, ug nagsugod sul-ob si Mulligan ug sweater nga dili na conrete ug color. And then RED starts to dominate so there's more violence ensuing...
So it's something like that the whole movie throughout and that's just one aspect of the many great elements sa salida. Add to that ang intriguing character sa Driver, type niya si Mulligan pero he knows he can't make her happy kay he's not only a cute face he's a killer so what he does? He helps her crush's husband para lang ma-happy iyang love, the irony of it all, etc. Plus there's great music, etc. For me it's a movie that you can visit and watch many more times and pick up mga lain nga meaning with every viewing.
I think mao amung wala nakuha. pero I think the fact nga wala mi kakuha sa akng amahan kai enough to suggest nga dli jd to mao amung mga type of movies. pero ka grabe, wa jd ku kabantay sa details. first movie pa sad hinuon to naku nakit-an ni Refn.
Sa Warrior, gi insaktohan ra ku sa build up. I mean, I agree nga power kaau ang 2nd half sa movie compared sa 1st pero para naku, it was enough nga dli ra pd ku ma bore. and mao jd akng ma ingon about the movie, maau kaau nila pagka dala ilang characters, especially Nolte. biased ku ni Tom Hardy kai ganahan ku niya nga actor so dli nlng ku mu praise niya. wala hinuon ku na annoy nila. haha. sa redundant nga shots, i think imo pasabot kai sa ufc na nga part? dghan btaw to. mura gd ug naa'y pattern. pero ok rman. wala man kaau ku ni mind sa first watch, pag 2nd watch na ku kabantay.
Sa 50/50, I think dli pa kaau ku karelate sa imung comments maybe tungod wala pa ku kita anang We Need to Talk About Kevin. unya mura'g usa sa reasons ganahan ku sa 50/50 kai tungod sa mga gadala, JGL and Seth Rogen. dli man hinuon superb ilang pag portray sa ilang characters. I think kailangan pa ku mutan-aw ug Kevin arn mka realize ku sa imung comments regarding the definite technicality. All in all, I think gi mingaw lang ku ug Drama nga movie kai I've been watching Sitcoms the past 2 months. haha
Agree ku sa tanan imung gipanulti about Midnight in Paris especially the literary characters and the score! malingaw jd ku sa music. In-ana man jd nuon na usually si Woody Allen.
damn nindot gyud kau ang warrior fighter gyud kau hahah
Well, I believe sad gid hinoon nga para ma appreciate nimo ang further movies sa usa ka director mas maayo ma familiarize ka daan sa previous niya movies or kita kag other movies nga similar ang style, etc. Kung ganahan kang Tom Hardy, You have to watch "BRONSON" which is directed by Refn and starring a tour-de-force performance by, cha-da-- TOM HARDY. Murag mao ni salidaa naka pa bring spotlight niya even though ni-star na siya sa previous movies like RocknRolla ug Marie Antoinette.
I don't mind very long movies nga mo take ug time building up basta either ang build-up kay worth it OR samtang ga build up kay naay interesting nga mga aspects nahitabo nga makatabang sa build up. No I don't refer sa mga scenes sa UFC kay ok-han rako ako. In fact mubuan rako.
Sa Warrior man gud way klaro nga pay-off sa end kay it was trying to build up something, and taking too much time, nga murag naay i-disclose nga explosive revelation sa ending. Pero wala ra. Kato ra gyud diay. Di ka move-on si Tom Hardy sa past, nga iyang alcoholic & abusive papa maoy naka directly bungkag sa pamilya ug indirectly sa death sa iyang mama, which is gi reveal na daan sa unahan pa sa salida.
Though nindot to na allegory na all he needed in order to "tap out" which would mean "move on and forget the past" was ingnan ug "I love you" murag sudden rapud kaayo to nga ing-ana ka paspas. Nya murag wala rapud kaayo to na-maximize tong back story about sa death sa iyang bff kay murag taphaw lang. I don't know, for me, the writing was a mess.
Sa pagkakaron ang masud ragid sa akong utok nga nindot kaayo pagka build up kay "DIABOLIQUE" which is a 1955 black&white French film directed by Clouzot. Ganahan ta ko mo-suggest ug lain movie nga kanang latest unya colored para you can compare. Pero wa koy mahuna-hunaan lain.. hmmm.. cguro "Memento" ni Chris Nolan or "The Lives of Others" ni Donnersmarck but mga thrillers mani cla...hahaha
50/50 ug "Kevin" ayaw cla i-compare as a movie ha kay lain ra kaayo na cla. haha. tan-awa lang ang concrete nga style sa "Kevin" nya fantastic acting ni Tilda Swinton. Tell me when you see this.. hehe
wala na akong ma say! hahaha except nga I think bullseye kaau ni nga comment.
All in all I think we can say it was a good movie. Great, for some (like me), but the least would be 3 out of 5 stars.
BertR, I have heard of BRONSON, haven't seen it but will definitely watch it. also, Kita napd ku ug Memento and as usual Christopher Nolan delivers. nag search ku ug "Kevin" karn but wala pai tarung copy. Screeners mostly and bati daw audio. haha will update you on that. peace out
hahaha.. Katawa ko kay nganong na 3 out of 5 stars naman lang ang Warrior? Bitaw, I don't mean to influence you sa imong pag tan-aw sa salida. Ako lang good discussion.
Kung wapa diay ka kita ug The Lives of Others tan-awa nag suway. First film na sa director sa "The Tourist" kato Jolie ug Depp. Nindot na. Kanang Diabolique b&w man gud na nya di man tanan ganahan mutan-aw ug b&w gud.
Mayka sige kag tan-aw sitcoms, hehe. Di man sad kaayo ko ganahan ug TV shows. Yehey!
