The others that may follow this answer would probably have the same questions and tips:

1) What are you going to use it for? Would it be a general purpose point and shoot? Are you thinking of pursuing serious photography?

If you want a general purpose PnS, then find those with plenty of scene modes (Portrait, Landscape, Macro, etc.). If you are thinking of serious photography, find a PnS with Program, Aperture, Shutter, and Manual modes. Basically, these questions would help you refine your selection.

2) What is your budget?

After you've shortlisted PnS that would meet your needs, you further shorten the list within your budget.

3) After this, you need to visit camera shops and try the phones. Are they comfortable to hold? is the menu system intuitive or user-friendly?

It took me 3 months to decide on a DSLR - sige research but ultimately it was service center vs no service center and I opted for service center (Canon). Honestly, I would have gone the Nikon route only if they had a service center by the time I bought a DSLR.
