Reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. and Southern Islands champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters got a stinging dose of reality as they got whitewashed by the reigning UAAP and Philippine Collegiate Champions League champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, 53-100, yesterday at the start of the Final Four round at the Arena in San Juan City.
San Sebastian also pulled off a surprise rout of San Beda, 87-72, in an NCAA Finals rematch that got marred by a bench-clearing incident late in the game.
Ian Sangalang paced the Stags with 20 points and 12 boards for the Stags, who started to pull away in the second quarter against a depleted San Beda side.
Calvin Abueva had 19 markers, 10 boards and five assists before getting thrown out with just 2:11 minutes left following an on-court scuffle that saw the ejection of eight players.
The much-anticipated match-up between Greg Slaughter of Ateneo and Junemar Fajardo of UC was seen in limited doses as the latter played in just 14 minutes of action because of a nagging knee injury.
Still Fajardo managed 12 points and nine rebounds but was severely outplayed by Slaughter, who had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The road does not get easier for the visiting Webmasters today as they take on the Red Lions today.

(BANAT SPORTS)

DepEd Regional Director Recaredo Borgonia said Cviraa will send better teams in Palaro 2012

THE Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association came and went without incident and the Department of Education is confident that for the next Palarong Pambansa, they will be sending a better set of athletes—especially in the basketball competitions.
“Last year, we had to deal with a lot of conflicts that led us to sending a so-so squad, especially in basketball. Last year, we sent a token team and even before the event started, we were already sure that we will not win.
Plan your Sinulog week ahead and find out what's in store for Sinulog 2012.
“For the next Palarong Pambansa, it will be different. We have a strong squad going and we know that we will be in contention,” said Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Recaredo Borgonia.
Last year, DepEd got in a disagreement with a local school league, which did not allow its strongest teams to join because of the conflict in schedule. This resulted to having sent a team, which is not part of the champion team.
During the Cviraa in Tagbilaran last week, Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. finalists University of the Visayas and reinforcement from Cebu Eastern College and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu battled it out in the Cviraa final.

“It was just a matter of proper coordination. We do not have to subject our athletes to this dilemma. It should be from the sides of the officials to deal with the situation. This way also, it was more peaceful, we got to choose the best athletes and we generated support from parents,” he added.
This time around, the best teams in Cebu and the region battled it out in the Cviraa finals and Borgonia said that he is confident they will do better in the Palaro.
Borgonia added that this also proves true in the other events. “I have seen that there was a wider distribution in the medals. We saw many emerging teams this year,” he added.
Borgonia, who will be retiring next year, said he is happy that he will be leaving his post with the Cviraa in place. “This is an indication that our sports development program is taking off. Although it’s a stretch, an improvement of our ranking in the Palarong Pambansa will be a good farewell for me,” said Borgonia.

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters gave it their all but ran out of ammunition in the endgame as they succumbed to the reigning NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions, 77-83, in the semifinals of the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
After being blasted by the reigning UAAP and PCCL champions Ateneo Blue Eagles, 53-100, in their opening game last Monday, the Webmasters came back and displayed uncanny grit and outside shooting in the face of a San Beda squad that was also hungry for a win after losing to San Sebastian, 72-87.
But the game was the Red Lions’ to take as they took advantage of the Webmasters’ zone defense and buried five three-pointers in the fourth period, none more lethal than the one that was shot by former University of San Jose-Recoletos gunner Mar Villahermosa that gave San Beda an 82-75 lead with 1:15 left.
The win by San Beda paved the way for the San Sebastian Stags to make it to the finals and clinch the twice-to-beat advantage. Earlier, the Stags eked out a come-from-behind 70-69 win over the Blue Eagles with NCAA MVP Calvin Abueva getting 20 points and 11 rebounds to pick up the slack left behind by Ronald Pascual, who sustained an ACL injury to his left knee in their last game.
The Eagles appeared headed for an easy win as they led, 65-53, with five minutes left in the game. However, the Stags came roaring back behind Abueva and Sangalang, whose short turnaround jumper with 52.6 ticks left gave San Sebastian the lead for good, 68-66. Ateneo guard Kirk Long actually hit a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer but his shot was waved off as it did not come in time.
Sangalang ended up with 18 points while Greg Slaughter led Ateneo with 16 points.
UC takes on the Stags tomorrow while Ateneo and San Beda figure in a battle for the last ticket to the finals on Friday.
