Webmasters score repeat over SWU Cobras in PCCL Southern Islands Championships

It was a different day, a different venue, a different tournament that produced the same result.
This as the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters reasserted their mastery of Southwestern University (SWU) in winning the Southern Islands championship in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League after they slipped past the Cobras, 63-58, yesterday at the Ormoc Superdome in Ormoc City.
The rivalry that best defined the 2011 season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) spilled over to the Ormoc Superdome as the two teams picked up where they left off in the seniors division finals series, which the Webmasters won in five games.
The Webmasters built a lead that went as high as 22 and then withstood an injury to star center Junemar Fajardo and a late-game barrage by the Cobras to win the title and earn a slot in the PCCL Final Four.
UC started to pull away in the second period as Fajardo took advantage of the absence of the foul-plagued Justin Aboude to scatter 11 points in that stretch and put his team on top, 35-22.
The Cobras were able to creep within seven, 28-35, at the start of the second half but the Webmasters unleashed a 22-5 blast that was highlighted by three triples from Edward Pao and a ferocious slam by Fajardo to establish a 57-38 lead heading to the final period.
But the Cobras did not give up easily as they started the fourth period with a 16-4 run that sliced the deficit down to just seven, 54-61.
Making matters worse for UC was the apparent knee injury that Fajardo sustained on a looseball play that sidelined him at the 4:02 mark.
A score by Eleazar Armecin followed by an inside stab by Aboude off a nice feed from the former with 58.9 seconds left pushed the Cobras even closer, 58-61.
The Cobras got the possession back after a wayward three attempt by Robinson Mohammad but they were unable to convert as Junrey Ortuyo missed on two perimeter jumpers.
Mohammad then sealed the game with two free-throws with 4.3 ticks remaining.
Fajardo ended up with 21 points while Pao and Brian Heruela each had 14.
The Cobras were led by the 23 of Armecin and the 19 of Aboude.
The Webmasters start their Final Four campaign on Monday. The semifinals will be a round-robin affair featuring the Ateneo Blue Eagles, the San Beda Red Lions and the winner of the match between Letran and San Sebastian, which was ongoing as of this writing.

MANILA, Philippines—
San Sebastian and University of Cebu completed the Final Four cast of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League after topping their respective Sweet 16 legs late Wednesday at the Ormoc Astrodome in Ormoc City.
Calvin Abueva, the reigning NCAA MVP, and Ian Sangalang rallied the Stags to an 83-76 victory over Letran in the final knockout duel in the Luzon-Metro Manila bracket.
The Webmasters also needed another big game from Junmar Fajardo to eliminate Southwestern University, 63-58, in the Visayas-Mindanao leg.
The Stags face reigning NCAA titlist San Beda in the Final Four while the Webmasters battle the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a match where Fajardo could face an old nemesis in former University of Visayas star Greg Slaughter.
Slaughter is expected to lead the UAAP “four-peat” champions, who, like the Lions earned outright Final Four berths in the nationwide tournament.
The favored Eagles, whose core suited up for the national team in the Southeast Asian Games, take on the Webmasters first at 2 p.m. on Monday at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan, after which the Stags and the Lions collide in a rematch of this season’s NCAA Finals.
San Sebastian hopes to build on the momentum of its recent win where Abueva and Sangalang lifted the Stags from a 13-point deficit at the break, 34-47, against the Knights.
Abueva topscored with 26 while Sangalang finished with 21 points for the Stags, who struggled early even if the Knights played minus top gunner Kevin Alas, who’s training in the United States.
The 6-foot-10 Fajardo had 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Webmasters, the Cebu collegiate champions, past the Cobras.

BREAKING NEWS::::: CVIRAA HIGH SCHOOOL BASKETBALL
Mandaue City manned entirely by SHS Ateneo de Cebu players defeated the Cebu City "dream team" composed of players from the UV Baby Lancers and the CEC Dragons ~ 67-65. The Magis Eagles's Juniors basketball team won the CVIRAA high school basketball championship trophy last December 2 on their very first attempt.
TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines – As expected, the mighty Cebu City Niños claimed their 19th straight overall championship in dominating fashion at the close of the 2011 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet yesterday at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex here.
Cebu City, however, suffered some heartaches in secondary basketball after the Niños, manned by players from the University of the Visayas (UV) with reinforcements from Cebu Eastern College (CEC), were dethroned by the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles-manned Mandaue City, 65-67. The Niños' younger counterparts lashed back at Mandaue though, 76-48, to win the gold in elementary level.
Nevertheless, the Niños reasserted their dominance in the annual sports conclave of school-based athletes with 836.17 points.
In stark contrast to last year's rankings, Cebu Province was a distant second this time with 507.75 points. Mandaue City soared to the third spot with 321.5 points, while Bohol dropped to fourth place with 282 points.
Completing the top 10 finishers were Dumaguete (199.5), Lapu-Lapu (134.17), Tagbilaran (110), Negros Oriental (92), Talisay (71.75) and Danao (55.25).
TCC accumulated 60 points for sweeping the titles in secondary athletics, while in gymnastics held at the Maribojoc Cultural Center, Karen Sthea Velez and Gayle Marie Arda powered the Niños to golden finish in the second girls division.
Velez shone brightly in the rope, hoop, ball, all-around and team competition of the rhythmic sportive gymnastics (RSG), while Arda stamped her class in women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG) including the balance beam, floor exercise, vault, all-around and team competition along with Jamela Mae Moga and Frances Claire Arda.
In the elementary division, Francin Ly Coyoca also ruled the WAG events as well as the team competition alongside Deseriey Padilla and Diane Sophia Navarro.
In RSG, Mariane Alegado got the gold in rope and Eunice Odag in hoop. They joined Daniela Reggie de la Pisa in clinching the team gold.
The Cebu City taekwondo jins also reigned supreme in their respective divisions namely Asherah Nicole Dayuday (finweight), Danielle Estacio (flyweight), Jeah Maglasang (bantamweight), Micah Marie Mission (featherweight), Angela Nicole Elpa (lightweight), Janica Crezile Ybarra (welterweight) and Keith Brian Fernandez (featherweight).
In arnis, Maximo Caballes, Jr. hauled golds in individual single weapon, individual double weapon, extra lightweight and synchronized single weapon.
The Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC)-powered Cebu City booters snared the secondary boys crown after blanking Bayawan City, 7-0, behind the efforts of Junjay Arizabal, Jerome Vestil and Val Calvo.
The Niños also ruled in the elementary division after they trounced Mandaue City, 6-0, courtesy of the four-goal explosion of Agustin Rafael Roa.
Aside from gymnastics, taekwondo and gymnastics, TCC also grabbed golds in volleyball and table tennis.
Cebu Province’s golds came from girls volleyball and basketball, gymnastics, chess, sepak takraw, baseball and athletics.
Four-time Palarong Pambansa champion Catmon Elementary School stayed unbeaten in the elementary girls volleyball after trouncing Mandaue City, 25-21, 25-20. The championship in elementary athletics, baseball and chess events also helped jack up CP's points.
Aside from secondary basketball, Mandaue also raked in points in boxing, badminton, volleyball and football, while Bohol’s points came from the sepak takraw, softball and athletics.
Lapu-Lapu City was led by its secondary girls volleyball team from Pajo National High School. It took the secondary boys taekwondo title courtesy of Neil Ian Panghulan (flyweight) and Miles Del Rosario (bantamweight). (FREEMAN)
Stags, Lions renew feud in PCCL F-4
By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated December 05, 2011 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - San Sebastian and San Beda, the 87th NCAA finals protagonists and two schools that got involved in an ugly incident last week, renew their bitter rivalry as the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Final Four starts today at The Arena in San Juan.
The Stags and the NCAA champ Lions hit the court at 4 p.m. in their first duel since a highly physical best-of-three showdown in the NCAA cage wars.
Some see extra fireworks in the showdown, three days since the Red Lions basketball team of coach Frankie Lim and the Stag’s volleyball squad figured in a brawl in the NCAA’s volleyball competitions at the SBC gym, leaving SSC coach Roger Gorayeb and libero Mae Crisostomo with swollen faces.
Although the theme of revenge for a comrade is apparently in the air, SSC’s basketball mentor Topex Robinson isn’t going to turn this match into a “basket-brawl” with the Lions.
“It’s a chance for us to prove to everyone that we’re not squatters,” said Robinson. “I told them that it’s an extra motivation for us since it was like a sister and a father who got involved in that fight.”
Another old rivalry explodes in the 2 p.m. curtain raiser as giants Greg Slaughter of UAAP four-peat champion Ateneo and Junmar Fajardo of CESAFI victor and Southern Island titlist University of Cebu lead their respective teams.
The 6-11 Slaughter and the 6-10 Fajardo pick up from where they left off in the CESAFI, Cebu’s prominent varsity league. Slaughter starred for University of the Visayas and disputed cage supremacy in the Queen City of the South against Fajardo prior to transferring to Manila to join Ateneo.
Slaughter spearheaded the UV Lancers’ three-peat romp in the CESAFI and continued his winning ways with the Eagles in the UAAP. Fajardo was left to dominate, leading the Webmasters to back-to-back titles.
UC vs. ateneo karon

- BANAT NEWS

CVIRAA 2011
BLEACHER TALK By Rico Navarro (The Freeman) Updated December 04, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)
Another edition of the CVIRAA has passed and so we ask again, “How was it?’” Like any major endeavour, the bottom line question must be asked, “Did the CVIRAA achieve its goals?” Sure, we’ll hear stories about how “successful” it was, but from what perspective: over-all organization? over-all hosting? or over-all performance of the athletes?
You’ve probably heard stories of how Tagbilaran did a good job of hosting CVIRAA 2011. The cynics will say it wasn’t that great, but we must put everything in the proper perspective. A major sports event must always be evaluated based on the goals set. As far as the CVIRAA is concerned, I recall the DEPED regional office and Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young talking about how to break the fourth place jinx that we have at every Palarong Pambansa. The CVIRAA is very much part of the equation since this is where the region’s athletes to the Palaro will be selected. So for now, let’s forget about the over-all hosting, management and running of the games. These should be a given after all these years and the region shouldn’t get a failing mark in this department. If we are serious about breaking our Palaro jinx, the CVIRAA must be evaluated vis-a-vis our previous performances in the Palaro.
For starters, we should look into the performances of all our gold medallists and benchmark these against the gold medal performances of the past two or three editions of the Palaro. For instance, is the winning time of the 100-meter dash at par or better than the previous Palaro winners of the past two years? In this simple case study, Celina Mae Revalde won the CVIRAA 100-meter dash for high school girls with a time of 13.13 seconds. The winning time of the same event at the Palaro 2011 was 12.38 seconds. Celina, a junior at Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, now has between today and April to cut the gap between both times. Is it possible? With the right approach, training and support, it sure is. But this is only one of the many events at the Palaro. At this stage, the CVIRAA’s sports managers must already be setting standards and goals for every sport so we know how much and what we need to do to get it done. The planning must start now so that the next three months can be used wisely and productively. Otherwise, having the CVIRAA held in November will turn out to be a useless exercise. We must also forget that we’re going to be evaluated on how we manage our delegation, i.e. transpo, accommodations, pretty uniforms and good-looking athletes. Again, that’s a given. The success of the CVIRAA must be gauged based on the learnings that we gained from our performances, and what we plan to do to get nearer to the gold medal standards.
Another factor to look into are the events which traditionally give us the points for an over-all championship standing. High school football has become a top-pointer for us thanks to the Don Bosco team of Coach Glen Ramos (spiced with a few other players). Obviously, the target here is to maintain the same level. The other side of the puzzle is to look at the events that have a potential to give us the much-needed points but which never really clicked in the past. Over-all, we score points in around 25 of the 30 events being played. That’s a good sign. It means that we’re competitive in these, but not getting to the top two of each event consistently. The goal here is to obviously go for the gold in these events which consistently give us points, and to also work on events where we were shut out.
One factor that strikes me every year is that money doesn’t seem to be a problem at all in every CVIRAA. It’s a multi-million peso project involving all the different DEPED divisions in the region with funding coming in easy. Transportation, uniforms, food, snacks, water, accommodations and over-all logistics support is complete. Allowances for athletes, coaches and tournament officials are also included, making this the richest sports event of the region every year. Since money isn’t an issue, let’s use this to take care of our athletes as they prepare for the Palarong Pambansa 2012. Let’s continue to pour resources into the training needs of our athletes, and this includes not only practice, but also providing tune-up competitions for them as they prepare for the Palaro.
So was the CVIRAA 2011 successful? Don’t ask that question now. Let’s talk again after Palaro 2012. Are you game?
