CEBU, Philippines - Suwayan sa Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu pagdepensa sa ilang korona sa national Passerelle championship sa ilang pagsalmot sa national finals sa Milo-backed BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Tournament 2011 sugod karong adlawa didto sa Xavier School Gym sa San Juan, Metro Manila.

Ang Magis Eagles midaog na og lima ka higayon isip Passerelle champion dinhi sa Sugbo ug upat na ka higayon nga midaog sa Visayas Regional championship.

Nagtinguha kini og back-to-back titles sa Under-15 age bracket.

Ang mohatag og kalig-on sa Magis Eagles mao ang Under 15 players nga sila si Dawn Hynric Ochea, Rendell Senining, Dave Yu, Bro Catan, Laeil Medalle, Miguel Competente ug Jarek Mercado. Mosuporta sab ang mas batan-ong mga players nga sila si Jari Igna, 14-anyos ug ang 13-anyos nga si Janjan Jaboneta.

Ang Passerelle division pagalangkuban kini'g pito ka players nga Under-15, unom ka Under-14 players ug duha ka Under-13 players. Tinguha sa Magis Eagles nga mobawi didto sa Manila human sila mapilde sa ilang kampanya sa juniors division sa 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. Wala pa kaayo motusik ang Magis Eagles ug daw pinugngan ang ilang duwa hinungdan nga nabiyaan kini sa sayong bahin sa first period, 0-7. Hinuon nakan-an ang labaw ngadto na lang sa tres puntos paghuman sa maong kuwarter, 10-13.

Sa kanipis sa labaw, daling nakuha sa Magis Eagles ang momentum sa kombinasyon nilang Jair Igna, Jarek Mercado ug Bro Catan aron moposte og 37-22 sa halftime.

Eagles secure second straight Passerelle title

As the saying goes, when one door is closed, another one is opened. For the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, when their door to the juniors championship in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. was shut, their path for a repeat in the 2011 Milo-backed BEST Twin Tournament was paved.

And they walked proud and tall yesterday as they claimed a second straight crown in the Passerelle division as the Magis Eagles routed the Holy Child School of Davao, 65-43, in the championship game at the Xavier School gym here in San Juan City.

Using the pain of their title loss to the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers as motivation, the Magis Eagles took on all comers and reigned supreme when it mattered the most.

At first, they struggled shaking off the Reds as they led by just one, 12-11, after the first period, no thanks to the shooting of Vincent Fernandez who had all nine of his points during that stretch.

However, it did not take long for the Magis Eagles to find their rhythm which was instantly provided by guards Jair Igna and Jarek Mercado. Igna shot in two three-pointers while Mercado contributed heavily from the perimeter which enabled the Magis Eagles to take a 34-28 into halftime.

The dam finally broke in the third as Ateneo de Cebu overwhelmed its opponents in the third period courtesy of a 19-6 rally that established a 53-34 lead.

Rookie sensation Jan Jaboneta teamed up with crafty point guard Rendell Senining for several baskets that gradually broke the backs of the Reds.

Jaboneta put an exclamation run to that run of theirs as he scored on a layup at the buzzer off a nice feed from Miguel Competente.

Jaboneta added two more baskets in the fourth periods that gave Ateneo de Cebu their biggest lead at 25, 60-35.

Igna led the way for the Eagles with 12 while Jaboneta added 11. Mercado chipped in with 10. Senining had a fine game quarterbacking the squad with six assists.

Sa kinatibuk-an, si Mayor Rama mi-iskor og 34 puntos, samtang laing duha niya ka teammates ang mirehistro sab og double figures.

Unang miabante ang DMDP ug gitapos nila ang unang 10 minutos sa duwa sa iskor nga 14-13. Apan ang Executives daling nakarekober ug milusad kini'g 22-12 run aron ilogon ang labaw sa halftime, 35-26.

Sa pagpangulo ni Mayor Rama, miburot pa ang ilang labaw ngadto sa 22 puntos sa third period, 64-42 nga maoy nakapaluya sa naghangak nga DMDP.

CVIRAA 2011 basketball starts this afternoon in Tagbilaran City.

The road to redemption for the Magis Eagles starts at 3pm today... if fate will allow, there will be a repeat of the CESAFI championship clash between the defending CVIRAA champion and highly favored UV Baby (Teen) Lancers and the younger Magis Eagles!

UV is representing Cebu City. It is reinforced by CEC's Sumayang and Sedillo plus USC's Ortega. SHS AdC is bringing 10 Junior players to the tournament leaving behind those who have academic issues. Completing SHS-AdC's mandatory 12 man line up are transferee from USJR Senining and 13 year old Milo Best sensation Jaboneta.

Cebuano teams UC, SWU take on separate foes in Ormoc Astrodome

(Cesafi) champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and runners-up Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras begins today as they take on separate opponents in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Ormoc Astrodome in Ormoc City.

The Webmasters are set to take on the STI Olympians, the Mindanao regional champions, while the Cobras await the winner of the Visayas regional championship game between the University of Iloilo Wildcats and the AMA Computer Learning Center Titans.

The winners in these matchups will meet tomorrow with a slot in the Final Four at stake. Also competing for a ticket to the semifinals are the Letran Knights and the NCAA runners-up San Sebastian Stags.

Already waiting in the semifinals are the UAAP champions Ateneo Blue Eagles and the NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions.

SWU head coach, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, who took the once ragtag Cobras squad to the cusp of a title in just his first year at the helm, is hoping that his team has learned their lessons from their loss in the recent Cesafi finals.

“Hopefully, they will be better from the experience of playing the Cesafi finals, and they will have learned their lessons from that loss,” said Alcoseba, referring to the heartbreaking Game 5 defeat they suffered at the hands of UC earlier this month.

The semifinals will be a round-robin affair that starts on Dec. 5. The top two teams at the end of that round will advance to the finals with the team with the best record attaining a twice-to-beat advantage.
